Utthan is a Gujarat based nonprofit modeled around gender, justice and inclusive community empowerment
About us
Utthan is a Gujarat based nonprofit modeled around gender just and inclusive community empowerment through capacity building, local leadership and institutional development at several levels. Developing just and equitable demonstrations, both technical and social, around people’s institutions of marginalized communities since 1981 has helped Utthan demonstrate best and brave practices and is a mechanism which lends sustainability and a clear multiplier impact. Addressing the issues of the most marginalized through a decentralized structure, it consciously engages local, committed women and men who lead operations and partake in decision making. Promoting peaceful coexistence, ensuring human rights, gender justice and inclusive, sustainable development for positive change in the status of the marginalized forms the core of Utthan’s approach. Utthan is registered under the Bombay Public Trusts, Act 1950 and under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. Indian donations to Utthan are exempt from Income tax under Section 80G of the Income tax Act, 1961.

For the first time, Utthan collaborated with PSG Institute of Management & Tamil Nadu Urban Livelihood Mission to provide financial literacy training to 250 SHG women. Women are now making informed financial decisions, proving that practical knowledge is the key to empowerment. But this is just the beginning! More such trainings are needed to ensure every woman becomes financially independent and confident in managing her finances. Let’s keep the momentum going! We sincerely appreciate the support of PSG Institute of Management and tnulm livelihood in making this initiative a success!

For Utthan, social justice is about shifting power dynamics, ensuring equal access to opportunities, and creating an inclusive, sustainable future where communities are recognized as key stakeholders. Towards this end, the integration of empowering tools and systems in whatever we do is not just strategic; it is indispensable. This approach has continuously surpassed the litmus and it is therefore an integral part of our organisational DNA.#WorldDayofSocialJustice

#ChampionSpotlight: Utthan For over 40 years, Utthan Gujarat has empowered numerous women and girls in Gujarat to stand up for their rights and become community leaders. Their work in gender justice, livelihoods, water security and social inclusion has helped communities thrive through local action. What makes Utthan unique is its community-led approach, where local women and second-generation leaders drive change. Their seamless integration of gender equity into development made them a natural fit for SVP’s support. At SVP India, collaboration is about more than just writing cheques, it is about building sustainable capacity for grassroot non-profits. Lead Partners are actively helping Utthan scale its impact by strengthening three key areas: • Organisational Development: Creating clear structures and measurable goals by implementing Organogram and KRA-based goal setting • Fundraising Capacity: Building in-house fundraising skills to secure sustainable resources and expand impact independently • M&E tool kit: Enhancing data collection and analysis to measure impact effectively and improve decision-making Utthan’s journey proves that real change starts at the grassroots. SVP India is proud to support and learn from an organisation committed to women-led transformation.
