#MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthCampaign When a loved one is struggling with depression, the weight of finding the right help often falls on their family. But where do you begin? How do you decide which path to follow when words like #NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and neuroplasticity appear in discussions of conjunction therapies? It’s overwhelming, isn’t it? As an ordinary person, the questions swirling in your mind might look like this: What exactly is NLP? Is neuroplasticity even a treatment? Which one will help my loved one regain their spark? In moments like these, confusion can paralyze action. But knowledge can light the way. NLP: NLP focuses on understanding how people organize their thoughts, language, and behavior to achieve specific outcomes. It’s like an emotional toolkit that helps individuals identify negative patterns, beliefs, or triggers and replace them with positive ones. For someone battling depression, NLP can serve as a mirror—helping them reflect on their inner dialogue and reshape self-sabotaging narratives. It’s often used in conjunction with counseling or psychotherapy, offering techniques to instill confidence and clarity. #Neuroplasticity: The Brain’s Ability to Heal and Transform Neuroplasticity, on the other hand, refers to the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. It’s not a therapy in itself but a foundational concept that drives many therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, or even physical exercise. For someone with depression, neuroplasticity represents hope—the promise that the brain can adapt and recover, no matter how dark the current moment feels. It’s about creating new pathways that reinforce positivity and resilience. So, How Do You Choose? Coming up with all the answers in our next post. Stay tuned! #MentalHealthCampaign The Indian government is taking a significant step forward in addressing mental health challenges in higher education institutions (HEIs) with a comprehensive initiative. This program, in collaboration with over 200 institutions including IITs, IIMs, NITs, and central/state universities, has engaged 350 students and faculty members in discussions to enhance mental health support systems. National Wellbeing Conclave: Hosted by IIT Hyderabad, this event aims to create a robust framework emphasizing immediate and preventive mental health measures. The Conclave’s theme, "Integrated Approach for Promoting Mental Health, Resilience, and Wellbeing," has brought together educators, students, mental health professionals, and policymakers to address the mental health needs of HEIs. With 10.6% of Indian adults experiencing mental health disorders and urban metros facing heightened challenges, this initiative aims to reduce the treatment gap (70-92%) and create a proactive, multi-layered support system. In recent years, mental health issues among students in India’s higher education institutions have become a critical concern. According to data from the Ministry of Education, suicide rates among students have seen a notable rise, with 2023 marking an increase of 14% in student suicides compared to the previous year. This issue has been especially prevalent at premier institutes like IITs, where students face immense academic pressure. A recent collaborative study by researchers from NIMHANS, the University of Melbourne, and various Indian academic institutions has revealed alarming rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among college students in India. Published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, the study surveyed 8,542 students from 30 universities across 15 cities, finding that 18.8% of students had considered suicide at some point, and 6.7% had attempted it. Moderate to severe symptoms of depression affected 33.6% of students, while 23.2% reported similar levels of anxiety. IIT Initiatives: Sunshine Buddy Program (IIT Hyderabad): Trained mentors support first-year students, improving confidence and stress management for 85% of participants. Healo Program (IIT Bombay): Offers counselling, mindfulness workshops, and online support, leading to a 30% improvement in emotional well-being. Be Happy (Kushal) Program (IIT Madras): Focuses on group counselling, yoga, and lifestyle management, improving community and well-being for 76% of participants. As this initiative unfolds, what other/better strategies do you believe HEIs should adopt to make mental health support more accessible and effective? Share your thoughts below. What's more delightful than visiting the office of your favorite social media platform—the one you've been using for the past 8 years? Yes, that’s exactly the experience I had, and it was truly one to cherish! Visiting LinkedIn Tokyo office was an unforgettable experience. From enjoying a cup of coffee in LinkedIn-branded mugs to learning about their values and ethos, it was a day filled with inspiration and insight. A special thanks to Mr. Makoto Ishizaka , who generously shared LinkedIn's incredible journey with me and gave a wonderful office tour. What truly touched my heart were some of LinkedIn’s core values: inclusion, diversity, and a commitment to putting members first. I was told that LinkedIn practices what they preach, and it was inspiring to see these values come to life. I have so much more to share that one post simply can’t do justice to my visit. As promised, here I am with my second post about visiting LinkedIn ’s new #Tokyo HQ! The moment I entered the Linkedin office , I was greeted by a powerful statement on the wall: 'Create Economic Opportunity for Every Member of the Global Workforce.' Mr. Makoto Ishizaka walked me through LinkedIn’s six core values, which are proudly displayed on their office walls. These values are: 1.We embody diversity, inclusion, and belonging. 2 We dream big, get things done, and know how to have fun. 3 We put members first. 4.We are open, honest, and constructive. 5 We act as one LinkedIn. 6 We trust and care about each other. Being a #DEI trainer myself and the founder of #WahWoman, a platform dedicated to promoting #diversity, #equity & #Inclusion, I fully appreciate LinkedIn’s commitment to these principles because that's something I experienced as well. And as a longtime LinkedIn user, I can vouch for these values which I believe extend beyond employees—they’re for all members. Let me share with you that my first social media account was LinkedIn which I joined in the year 2016, and I chose it because of its authenticity, where connections are genuine, and profiles are real. Today, my network has grown to 7K, thanks to LinkedIn’s openness and constructive environment that allows people to connect so easily across the World. I truly admire #LinkedIn’s dedication to staying honest and constructive. Excited to continue building connections and learning on this platform! It was a true pleasure meeting Professor Hideko Nishioka , Vice Director of #OsakaUniversity's Center for Diversity and Inclusion, at Osaka, Japan. Our conversation highlighted some of the impressive strides #Japan is making toward gender equity, particularly in #STEM and addressing the #genderpaygap. Professor Hideko shared many positive insights on Japan's approach, including a notably low gender gap in the population, and discussed initiatives aimed at bringing more women into STEM fields. We exchanged several productive ideas, and I was inspired by her work on the Book of Diversity, where she is pioneering efforts within her department. Her commitment to advancing gender equity is truly remarkable, and I look forward to exploring ways to collaborate further. #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthCampaign Darwin famously stated, "Survival of the fittest" speaks not to mere physical strength but to the power of adaptability. Observing nature gives us profound insights into this. A tree, strong yet flexible, withstands fierce winds not by resisting but by bending. A chameleon, in its silent wisdom, seamlessly adapts to its surroundings, embracing change with ease. The same goes for us. The more we can adapt to change, the mentally stronger we become.Adapting isn’t about losing ourselves; it’s about growing through every shift and emerging stronger, with a mindset rooted in possibility. "The more flexible you are, the more adaptable you are, the more mentally healthy."This principle is supported by science, linking adaptability with improved mental resilience and overall well-being. Remember the last time you resisted changing your job, career, organization, place, or any challenging situation that demanded adaptability? It's true—human nature often resists change. But adapting to new situations and embracing flexibility can transform these experiences, building mental resilience and helping us grow stronger. Research shows that individuals who can adapt quickly to change experience lower levels of stress and are less prone to burnout. Resilienc is enhanced by flexibility, helping us remain balanced. A study published in Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy found that flexible thinkers are less likely to suffer from anxiety. Besides this, flexibility encourages cognitive agility, a skill that supports problem-solving, decision-making, and creativity. Psychological Science studies indicate that adaptable minds perform better in changing environments, which contributes to long-term mental sharpness. Flexible people tend to adapt better in social situations, fostering healthier relationships. This adaptability enhances our emotional intelligence, allowing us to understand and respond to others more effectively. Now we are curious about how you navigate sudden changes in your office, colleagues, or life situations? There are assessments available that measure flexibility and adaptability, helping you understand your strengths and areas to grow. Embrace change, stay curious, and remain open to growth.
