    I was today years old when I learned that Xerox is a brand of photocopy machines, and not the act of photocopying. I felt like a complete fool, but lets be honest, growing up we all saw those hand painted signboards that read "Xerox" and we all said, "I need to get this document xerox-ed". I'm talking Trademark Genericization (I had to practice how to pronounce the word),, and steps that brands can take to avoid it. #trademark #trademarkgenercization #brandguidelines

    Last week we got to conduct a workshop on "How to Build a Personal Brand.' Big thanks to Dipanwita Gupta (She/Her) for allowing us to conduct this session! Building a personal brand isn't as straight forward as one might think. When building a personal brand, its essential to remember that a consumer is buying into YOU as a service provider before they are buying the service you provide. Here, I will note that a personal brand is not the same as your "reputation". Reputation is subjective to a person's opinion of you, which will always vary based on the receiver. But your personal brand is a more intentional narrative. It is a representation of how you WANT people to see you! Building a personal brand encompasses a 7 step process. It is through these steps that you build a strong brand, one which builds credibility with your consumers : 1. Defining your brand's purpose 2. Valuating your brand 3. Creating a Personal Narrative 4. Define Target Audience 5. Embodying your brand 6. Brand Visibility 7.   • Building a brand strategy is vital to the development of a brand. If you nail this, the rest will be a slam dunk! But where do you begin and how does it add value to your brand? A client once asked us what he was meant to do with the mission & vision statement, and whether he was meant to print it and paste it on his office wall.   • This June, popular culture was drenched in a frankly putrid shade of green, officially marking the summer of 2024 as “Brat Summer,” inspired by Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, Brat. The disruption in aesthetic sensibilities can be observed in the world of branding as well, with emerging brands adopting an almost avant garde approach when it comes to representing their brands visually. Even existing brands are opting to refresh their identities in favour of a bolder, almost resilient aesthetic. Envato’s new brand identity, for example, involves a brighter and bolder palette, a clean, contemporary and strong wordmark, paired with a ‘Creative Spark’ symbol that lends so much dynamism to the brand and resonating with a consumer base that craves authenticity, innovation, and boldness in the brands they engage with.
