On January 9, 2025, Social & Media Matters (S&MM), in collaboration with the High Commission of Canada in India, hosted a panel discussion at Canada House on the ethical challenges of AI and deepfake technologies. We thank Jennifer Daubeny, Charge d’Affaires, for her empowering opening keynote, High Commission of Canada in India for supporting this vital initiative, and Jasvinder Kaur for curating the whole program. A special thanks to our panelists—Adrija Bose (BOOM), Ami Kumar (Contrails AI.), and Puneet Agarwal (Animesh Sinha and Partners)—for their insights, and to Arnika Singh, S&MM for moderating the session. Pratishtha Arora Vikram Singh - for the incredible support - playing a crucial role behind the scenes.  Key takeaways: 1. The need for culturally contextual and hyperlocalized policies to address AI governance in India. 2. Empowering stakeholders—policymakers, educators, and citizens—with the knowledge and tools to navigate AI responsibly. 3. The urgency for proactive policymaking and judicial adaptability to tackle ethical and legal challenges posed by rapidly evolving AI technologies. 4. Recognizing the dual nature of AI technologies, which offer immense innovation potential but also pose risks like deepfake exploitation and misinformation. 5. The critical role of digital literacy and awareness in enabling individuals to engage critically with AI-driven content and protect themselves in the digital landscape. 6. Strengthening multi-stakeholder collaborations to create inclusive governance models that amplify underrepresented voices. Thank you to all participants from India, Nepal and Bhutan for making this dialogue impactful. #AIethics #DigitalSafety Irshad Alam Vinay Kumar Animesh Sinha Aroon Deep Mitthat Hora Shireen Vakil Sabyesachi Bharti Pallavi Majumdar Diksha Sengar Garima Saxena Abhinav Kohli Lavanya Singh Devhuti Bakshi Aparna Prabhu Dr. Debjani Sahu Elisabeth Faure Rahul Bansal Raina Ghosh Sanghamitra Dutta Vrinda Maheshwari Sanskriti Srivastava Piyush Poddar Kencho Dorji

🚨 Debating Bans: A Nuanced Approach to Online Safety 🚨 The recent ban in Australia has sparked incredible discussions. Some are cheering it on, while others vehemently oppose it. After 15 years in the field of online safety, I believe it’s time to take a different, nuanced approach—one rooted in awareness, empowerment, and improvement. 1️⃣ Awareness: The internet is not just a tool; it’s an ecosystem. People must understand the technologies, algorithms, and mechanics that power it. Without this awareness, we’re lost. Education is key—be it in schools, colleges, or through large-scale public awareness campaigns. 2️⃣ Empowerment: Awareness leads to choice. Children and parents alike need the power to make informed decisions about their digital lives. Imagine a world where young people can confidently navigate the internet, choosing safety without sacrificing creativity or opportunity. 3️⃣ Improvement: Let’s face it—content moderation is in shambles. Criminal, hateful, and violent content still runs rampant. But with Generative AI and AI agents, we now have the tools to do better. The technology exists, and with investment and collaboration, we can make meaningful strides in creating safer digital spaces. Bringing awareness, empowerment, and improvement together is how we make the internet a place for creativity, innovation, and opportunity—not violence and hate. It’s achievable. It’s necessary. It’s time. Let’s work towards a safer, better internet. What are your thoughts? #OnlineSafety #DigitalEmpowerment #AIForGood #ContentModeration #Innovation #TrustAndSafety #OnlineSafety #AI #ReaponsibleAI Contrails AI Social & Media Matters

  • As a digital parenting community, we are deeply concerned about the impact social media is having on our children. The content they are exposed to is shaping their behaviors in alarming ways—normalizing violence, promoting substance abuse, and spreading toxic masculinity. We’ve seen firsthand how unchecked harmful content leads to aggression, addiction, and a skewed sense of identity among young users. As parents, we feel helpless watching these platforms fail to protect our children while their algorithms prioritize engagement over safety. It’s time for accountability. Social media companies must take immediate action to ensure a safer, healthier digital environment for our kids.

🚨 The Indian government has finally acknowledged what many of us have been raising alarms about: social media platforms are failing at enforcing community guidelines. India’s digital space has become a playground for cybercriminals, where harmful and illegal content spreads unchecked. This isn’t just a failure of policy—it’s a failure to protect billions of users who rely on these platforms for communication, connection, and commerce. The question is: why are platforms still unable to keep criminal content at bay? It’s time for urgent action—stricter accountability, robust moderation, and a commitment to safer online spaces. What steps do you think platforms and regulators should take to fix this? Let’s discuss. 👇 Social & Media Matters Contrails AI NDTV T.M. Veeraraghav

🌐 Battling Deepfakes at Scale: A Collaborative Approach for Effective Detection and Removal 🌐 As the deepfake ecosystem becomes increasingly complex, impacting justice, personal safety, and trust in digital spaces, it's evident that a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach is essential. At Contrails, we're joining forces with fact-checkers and platforms to tackle this issue head-on, leveraging AI-powered detection and removal solutions that operate at scale. 🔹 Complexity of Deepfake Issues: Deepfakes impact various sectors, with implications that demand urgent, diverse responses. 🔹 Gendered Impact: With the majority of deepfakes being pornographic and disproportionately targeting women, we’re particularly focused on solutions that address this severe gendered threat. 🔹 Content Moderation Challenges: Once shared, deepfakes spread rapidly, often irreversibly. Our AI technology provides real-time detection, enabling platforms to act before harmful content goes viral. 🔹 Legislative Gaps: As regulations catch up, the tech industry must step up to bridge this gap. Contrails’ AI solutions are built with compliance in mind, ensuring they adapt to emerging legislation. 🔹 Cross-Border Collaboration: This is a global battle. We’re committed to working with international researchers, policymakers, and tech platforms to develop and refine tools that counteract the deepfake threat worldwide. At Contrails AI, we’re constantly evolving our AI solutions to stay ahead of deepfake advancements, ensuring that our technology not only detects but also removes harmful content at scale. 🚨 Breaking: Australia Takes Bold Step to Ban Social Media for Children Under 16! After 15 years in the social media space, I've witnessed a pivotal moment in digital safety. Here's why this matters to every parent, educator, and tech professional: Earlier this year, we saw 5 major social media CEOs face Congress, acknowledging the need for better child protection online. Australia's move signals a global shift in how we approach digital safety for our youth. Three critical insights from my experience: 1️⃣ Content Moderation is Broken The challenge isn't just about willpower - it's an industrial-scale problem we're trying to solve with manual solutions. As my colleague Dave Willner points out, we need systemic changes, not just more moderators. 2️⃣ Beyond the Research Debate While critics argue about methodology and brain studies, we can't wait for perfect data. The real-world impacts on our children's mental health are becoming increasingly evident. 3️⃣ The End of Self-Regulation Just like every maturing industry, social media is moving from self-regulation to standardized safety protocols. This Australian legislation marks the beginning of a new era in digital governance. 🔍 What's Next? Global ripple effects in policy-making Enhanced platform accountability Greater awareness among parents and educators Safety-by-design becoming the norm, not an afterthought This is more than just another regulation - it's a watershed moment for digital safety. Australia's bold move could be the catalyst we needed for meaningful change. Thoughts? How do you think this will impact the future of social media? #DigitalSafety #SocialMedia #ChildProtection #TechPolicy #ParentalControl #DigitalWellbeing #Australia #TechRegulation Agree? Disagree? I'd love to hear your perspective! 🤔
