Through this book, we aim to amplify youth voices, foster greater awareness about digital realities, and inspire young readers to build a safer, more inclusive digital future for themselves and their communities. A big thank you to all the young contributors whose voices make this book so impactful, the editors at YKA who worked through every piece published, and especially to Osama Manzar and everyone at the Digital Empowerment Foundation who made this collaboration possible. Is a one-time ID upload on the Play Store really enough to protect your child’s privacy on your smartphone? In a recent report, many parents see a single upload as a convenient way to fulfill consent requirements, this approach risks overlooking the long-term impact on children’s privacy. A recent report by Youth Ki Awaaz, 'Balancing Consent and Customization', surveyed over 3000 parents and children across India, shedding light on how the new Digital Personal Data Protection (#DPDP) Act, 2023 is understood and received by both groups. Key findings: 1. #Children’s Perspective: Many children feel uncomfortable with the idea of parental approval for every new app or policy change, citing concerns about their privacy. 70% of children feel they can safely download apps and browse the internet unsupervised. 2. Parent’s perspective: 62% of parents prefer monitoring their child's online activities and lean towards a one-time upload of ID for verification on platforms like the Play Store to satisfy consent requirements. These insights reveal a gap between convenience and the intent of the law. The DPDP Act mandates verifiable parental consent before data collection or tracking of individuals under 18. However, a single, one-time parental approval could limit a child's evolving need for privacy while exposing their personal data to long-term monitoring. The report underscores the importance of clarity and continued dialogue on how best to protect children's data rights without compromising either their privacy or parental control. Further, relying on one-time consent can leave kids’ data exposed over time. There is a need for a more dynamic approach to safeguarding their digital lives. How do you think we can safeguard our kids on smart devices? Let me know in the comments below? #Privacy #AdPersonalization #DigitalMarketing #YouthData #Consent #DPDP
