On the other hand, Jio's focus on the Indian market and its explanation of its stance reflect a strategy tailored to local conditions and consumer demands. They may prioritize providing affordable and accessible services to Indian consumers while navigating the regulatory landscape. If a Satcom service provider were to offer a counter to Jio's terrestrial service through Satcom, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would likely evaluate it based on existing regulations and policies. Fixed broadband offers several advantages over mobile broadband, primarily concerning ●     Reliability: Less prone to interference and signal degradation, ensuring more stable connectivity. ●     Speed: Capable of delivering multigigabit capacity, fixed broadband outperforms mobile broadband, which maxes out around 500 Mbps with 5G. ●     Data Consumption Limits: Plans often provide higher data limits (150 GB to 1 TB per month) compared to mobile plans (which are around 20 GB per month). ●     Latency: With lower latency (approximately 5-7ms for fixed broadband compared to 28 ms for 5G mobile), fixed broadband is essential for real-time applications like online gaming and video conferencing. ●      Signal Strength: 4G, 5G or forthcoming 6G technologies primarily use higher frequencies that do not penetrate walls of dwelling units and thus affect reliability, redundancy, and robustness of wireless broadband. 5G Data Usage: Insights from TRAI's 2023-2024 Annual Telecom Services Report The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has published its Annual Performance Indicators for the Indian Telecom Services for FY 2023-2024. One key takeaway from the report is the 5G data usage, which currently stands at only 10.81% of the total data consumption. While this percentage may seem modest, it's important to consider the rapidly evolving infrastructure behind these numbers. As of April 2023, India had approximately 1.41 lakh 5G base transceiver stations (BTS), a figure that surged to 4.36 lakh by March 2024. This growth is set against a landscape of 28 lakh total BTS across the country. However, despite the significant increase in 5G BTS, the report highlights a critical issue: the underutilization of the vast spectrum allocated to 5G, particularly in the 3500 MHz and 26000 MHz bands. This underutilization underscores a broader challenge—it's not just about the capacity of 5G but also its coverage and effective utilization. It's purely a game more of Execution and technology. As per the govt latest data, ther are only 35 million home broadband in India with almost 2 TSP and more than 1500 ISPs in india. In countries like India, faster Broadband penetration must catch up equally to bridge digital divide with only wifi hotspot in very less time and in very less capex on which we are working on. Last week, GSMA CTO, Alex Sinclair was in Delhi, and he got the opportunity to interact with few industry leaders. The topics that we agreed to discuss with the industry leaders were Private 5G Networks, 5G Advanced, impact of AI on mobile networks, Open Gateway, and sustainability. Amongst all the topics, the first topic of private 5G networks was captivating enough to keep us all engaged throughout most of the session. One of the first points which came up for discussion was how can the industry avoid force-fitting technology to enterprise customers and develop better understanding of their needs. While there is a lot of talk about the advance features of the latest technology, the industry still lacks the devices which can support these new features. The solutions for the enterprises should be scalable and at the same time less complex to deploy. Simplifying our networks is the common theme which we are hearing from most of our industry conversations. Next on table, was the much-required discussion on skill development. Private 5G Network deployments will take off much easily if the people who are responsible for selling this solution are equipped and trained to position this properly, highlighting the value proposition. A strong value proposition will also ensure that cost becomes secondary. GSMA will continue to work with the industry to enable the penetration of private 5G networks, and work with our members to develop Open APIs for Open Gateway, fostering collaboration and helping in interoperability.
