  • Resource recovery from discarded COVID-19 PPE kit through Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis

    -

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the world saw an exponential surge in the production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, which eventually got discarded in the biomedical waste stream. In this study, 13 different polymer samples from the PPE kit were collected and characterized using FTIR, TGA and analytical Py-GC/MS. The findings of this study show that one discarded COVID-19 PPE kit mainly contains three polymers, viz., PP, PET, and PC, constituting 94 % by mass. HY and HZSM-5 catalysts…

The findings of this study show that one discarded COVID-19 PPE kit mainly contains three polymers, viz., PP, PET, and PC, constituting 94 % by mass. HY and HZSM-5 catalysts were used in the catalytic fast pyrolysis, and the different temperatures and feed-to-catalyst ratios were also optimised. According to the product yields discovered during this study, 145 kg of BTEX (Petrochemical) can be produced from 1 tonne of waste PPE kits as a valuable resource recovery by reducing GHG emissions.

India produces 15 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, but due to an unorganised waste management sector, 40% of it goes uncollected. India produces 15 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, but due to an unorganised waste management sector, 40% of it goes uncollected. Regarding the division of material ownership and profit amongst all stakeholders, there is a complex interaction (synergies, dependencies, tensions) between EPR systems, municipalities, traditional industry, and the informal recycling sector. I started a project named "GREEN AADHAAR" to address all of these problems. It is a digital infrastructure for the plastic waste management industry that combines blockchain and machine learning to establish identities for all players and create a plastic credit model for the sector. With the support of cutting-edge blockchain technology, the team at GREEN AADHAAR is working to increase trust, transparency, and traceability in the plastic waste management sector. This will enable us to reach the circular economy goal much faster. Both the academic community and the waste management industries have provided us with incredibly excellent mentorship support. The "Green Aadhaar" project is also connected to the IIT Madras "Social Innovation Club" team SAHAAY and NIRMAAN.
