Increased climate financing can help decarbonize Bangladesh’s industries and build a low-carbon, just, and climate-resilient future. While intergovernmental organizations and several international government partners are taking action to improve climate financing in Bangladesh, much more is needed. This includes more financing from the private sector and philanthropy, which have distinct roles in closing the significant finance gap that exists today. Big thanks to TriplePundit for interviewing Noa Gafni and John Harper on developing measurable, actionable social impact strategies for companies in the midst of uncertainty. "I think folks are taking the opportunity to go beyond the commitment," said John Harper, CEO of FSG. "If there is a silver lining in the midst of what can feel like chaos, I'm hopeful that more folks are going to move to that level of specificity to actually start operationalizing these ideas — as opposed to what in many ways were standalone commitments, disconnected from business, coming from organizations unclear of how they would measure any progress." Climate change mitigation through a transition to low-carbon manufacturing can help ensure a just, low-carbon, and climate-resilient future for Bangladesh’s textile and apparel, and construction sectors. These two sectors are key as they together contribute the majority of Bangladesh’s industrial employment, GDP, and emissions. Innovative processes that reduce on-site burning of fossil fuels and improvements in energy efficiency and material efficiency of existing processes can help reduce on-site burning of fossil fuels—currently responsible for 83% of textile and apparel sector emissions and 80% of construction sector emissions. But that’s not all. To tackle the remaining emissions from these sectors, which are from consumption of electricity from the grid, we need a dual approach: decarbonizing the grid and switching to onsite renewables. This is just a part of the bigger picture. To truly accelerate just transitions for these sectors, seven interlinked priorities can be pursued.
