With just a few months to go until Worth Farm reopens its gates to the Glastonbury hordes, festival organisers have kept tight-lipped about the line-up so far.
Who is definitely playing?
Stormzy, Kylie and Janelle Monae are the only acts to have been officially confirmed by Glastonbury so far.
Stormzy: Friday night headliner
The Brit Award winning grime artist was confirmed for Glastonbury 2019 as the first headline act.
He will headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday 28 June.
The news came from an unexpected source, as Oxfam shops displayed posters in a number of locations. Oxfam has long-standing links to the festival.
Stormzy has played Glastonbury 2017 on the Other Stage, and Glastonbury 2016 on the Sonic Stage, and will now headline after the massive commercial success of his 2017 album Gang Signs & Prayers.
Kylie Minogue: Sunday afternoon slot
The Australian pop queen will be playing Glastonbury for the first time, after having to pull out in 2005 due to health complications linked to her breast cancer.
She will play the Sunday afternoon “legends” slot, which has previously featured artists including Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie and Paul Simon.
Janelle Monae: West Holts stage
Janelle Monae will be headlining the West Holts stage on one of the nights at this year’s festival.
Emily Eavis announced the news on Lauren Laverne’s BBC 6 Music breakfast show, but did not say which night the US singer would perform.
Monae previously performed at the festival in 2011, and tweeted about her excitement after watching Beyonce headline:
Which artists have self-confirmed?
Some artists have already confirmed on their social media accounts that they will be playing Glastonbury 2019 before the official line-up is revealed by the festival.
Hacienda Classical: Friday night
Stage and time tbc.
Curator/producer/DJ Mike Pickering announced the news on Gordon Smart’s Radio X show.
Mike Skinner (DJ Shed): The Rum Shack
Day and time tbc.
The Streets star told Radio 1’s Annie Mac that he will be returning to Glastonbury’s Rum Shack for a DJ set, but stopped short of whether the whole group would be returning.
He said “we’ll see what happens before that” when asked about a possible appearance from the band.
Stay tuned for further news on whether “Your Fit But You Know It” will be performed at Glasto 2019.
Henge (Shangri-La), Mike Dennis (Croissant Neuf Big Top), Mik Artistik (Gaz’s Rocket Lounge – Shangri-La), Horse Meat Disco, My Bad Sister, Papaphone and A Different Thread have also self-confirmed.
Who else is rumoured to headline Glastonbury 2019?
The Spice Girls
Bookies’ odds: 11/2
The foursome are touring the UK (without Victoria Beckham) from mid-June, leaving fans wondering whether they might end their reunion shows with a last hurrah at Glastonbury. It would take a lot to beat their 1997 Brits performance, but it could well come close.
Mel C said earlier last summer that the band had their sights set on a slot at Worthy Farm. Asked about her ambitions for the group, she told The Daily Mirror: “Glastonbury”.
Likelihood: As well as confirming some of the big booked names for 2019 have never played Glastonbury before, Emily has also spoken about wanting to have a more equal line up, telling Music Week that the festival will strive to get a better gender balance compared to previous years. And what better way to achieve it than with a dose of Nineties girl power?
But such a sugary pop act may not go down well with stalwart Glastonbury fans, who are used to headline acts from traditional guitar bands. Although with Eavis having already ruled out Fleetwood Mac, telling the BBC: “We can’t keep putting those huge acts on because there aren’t many that we haven’t had now”, perhaps a slot for the Spice Girls could be on the horizon.
The Cure
Bookies’ odds: 1/4
British rockers The Cure have already announced they would play “around 20 festivals” in 2019, fuelling speculation one of those could be a headline slot at Glastonbury 2019.
They have already headlined the festival three times before, in 1986, 1990 and 1995. The band seem to be up for it again, but it doesn’t sound whether Glasto organisers would feel the same way.
Asked in July if they would headline the festival for a fourth time, singer Robert Smith told BBC 6Music: “Yeah, maybe. We haven’t had a happy history with Glastonbury over the years.
“Although we’ve headlines three times, we’ve never been on the best of terms. I don’t know if they forgive and forget. There are enough other festivals for us to play.”
Likelihood: Given their previous performance included a festivalgoer being air-lifted to hospital, there may be too history between them for the Glastonbury organisers and The Cure’s management to see eye-to-eye.
They have another album to tout, but chances are there are other festivals who may be more willing to sign them up.
Paul McCartney
Bookies’ odds: 14/1
Paul McCartney said he would “probably” return to headline Glastonbury when asked by Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2 back in June.
Likelihood: Macca, who released a new album in September, would be a prime candidate for the Legends slot if so. But given Eavis has gone on the record to say two of the big acts confirmed for this year have never played Glasto before, it seems he’d be less of a likely choice than Kylie.
McCartney last played at the festival in 2004, when he headlined the Pyramid Stage on the Saturday night.
Bruce Springsteen
Bookies’ odds: 18/1
Emily has already reportedly ruled out Madonna, Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin for the Sunday afternoon Legends slot, meaning Bruce Springsteen could still be in the running for a sing-a-long slot on the Pyramid Stage.
Likelihood: According to a report from The Daily Star, which admittedly runs with a question mark in its headline: “Bruce Springsteen to headline Pyramid Stage?”, The Boss is set to return a decade after his last performance at Glasto.
A source close to the festival allegedly told the paper Springsteen would be taking one of the top spots again, 10 years after he first performed in 2009.
