Sara Ramirez has stoked suspicion among fans that they will not return for the third series of And Just Like That following an Instagram post about the “duplicitous” nature of the entertainment industry.
The 48-year-old actor has played the role of Che Diaz in the Sex and the City spin-off series since its launch in 2021.
Their character, a non-binary comedian, was introduced as a co-worker of Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw and then a love interest of Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon.
Audiences and critics were split over Ramirez’s character, with Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast calling them “the worst character on TV.”
Has Sara Ramirez been axed from And Just Like That?
An official statement regarding the actor’s future in the HBO Max series has not been made, but sleuthing fans have read between the lines following an Instagram post the actor shared on Wednesday 17 January.
“Our industry is so duplicitous,” Ramirez began, before accusing Hollywood insiders of “making blacklists of actors and workers who post anything in support of Palestinians in Gaza to ensure they will not work again”.
“While they lift up some of their own clients who have spoken up against this genocide, they are firing and letting others who have smaller platforms go.”
Writing in the midst of awards season, they implied it was a convenient distraction from the conflict in the Middle East.
“I get it. Awards are shiny and people need to pay their rent or feel special and powerful. Meanwhile, we are beyond the 100-day mark on this ‘war’ that has been acknowledged by many, including the ICC, as a genocide.
“It’s wild how performative so many in Hollywood are. Even more performative than the last character I played,” they continued, adding a painted nails emoji.
In addition to the cryptic message, for which comments are disabled, a Daily Mail report claims that the actor has been dropped from the show, with sources claiming their divisive character was “a waste of airtime” and “annoying” fans.
According to the publication, an insider close to the show claimed that the reason for this was nothing to do with their pro-Palestine stance, however, stating instead that Ramirez’s head had been “on the chopping block since last season” because their character “‘held no value any more” and was “annoying”.
They added: “After Che split with Miranda, the character really held no value anymore and fans found them annoying.
“The storyline as a struggling comedian was a waste of airtime and Sara knew it.”
i has contacted HBO Max seeking confirmation on the rumours.
When is the third series of And Just Like That on TV?
HBO Max has confirmed that the third season of And Just Like That won’t arrive until 2025.
The Hollywood actors and writers strike that took place in 2023 has likely delayed production on the series, which was officially renewed in August 2023.
“We are thrilled to spend more time in the Sex and the City universe telling new stories about the lives of these relatable and aspirational characters played by these amazing actors,” said executive producer and showrunner Michael Patrick King at the time.
“And Just Like That… here comes season 3.”
