What we’re looking for
Opinion and analysis pitches which offer new angles on the news, as well as engaging original stories drawn from personal experience. Your pitch should be well-argued, punchy and genuinely interesting – it should make us want to read on.
If your pitch is a take on a news story, check whether something similar has already been written for i or elsewhere. If so, can you find a new way into it which hasn’t been widely covered?
If you would like to pitch a first person piece that is not related to the news agenda, tell us what makes the story relatable or intriguing to a reader, and why it needs to be told.
How to pitch
Before pitching, check that you’re contacting the right editor or department for your piece.
For opinion, first person and analysis-based comment pieces, new contributors should email commentdesk@inews.co.uk. Other sections’ contact details can be found on our About page.
All pitches should be sent by email. Editors cannot accept pitches over the phone or on social media.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to reply to all the pitches we receive. If you don’t receive a reply within 24 hours, it’s fine to pitch it elsewhere – this won’t affect your chances of being commissioned by us another time.
What your pitch should look like
Keep pitches short and snappy – a few bullet points or a couple of paragraphs describing your argument or story and what you’d include should be enough.
Please don’t send us a fully written piece, as it’s unlikely we will be able to publish it. We ask for pitches so we can work with you to shape the argument, structure and content of your piece.
Use the subject line of your email to sum up the main argument or selling point of your pitch – almost as if it were a headline.
Add links to examples of your previous work at the end of your email and tell us a little bit about yourself. Keep it brief and relevant. If you don’t have much previous writing experience, focus on why you are the right person to write the article you are pitching – for example, if you have any direct experience of the topic, or expert knowledge on the subject you want to write about.
