The Queen is celebrating an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee in 2022, as she marks 70 years on the throne.
Elizabeth II, who turned 96 in April, is being honoured with an extensive programme of events, as well as an extra bank holiday across the UK.
The spring bank holiday, which usually takes place on the last Monday of May, has been moved to create a four-day weekend, affecting supermarket opening hours.
Here’s what you need to know.
When are supermarkets open?
Asda
The hours for individual stores may vary, however, based on previous bank holidays it is likely some Asda stores could open from 8am instead of 7am and close at 8pm instead of 10pm or midnight on the bank holidays. You can check the hours of your local store here.
Aldi
Aldi says that on Thursday 2 June, stores are open from 8am to 10pm. On Friday, the hours are again 8am to 10pm, and the same on Saturday. On Sunday, stores will open later, at 10am, and close earlier at 4pm. However, it advises that opening hours may vary, so check your local store’s opening hours here.

Lidl advises that opening times will vary from store to store across the bank holiday. It encourages customers to check the opening times of their nearest store using the store locator here.
Morrisons
Morrisons stores should have regular bank holiday opening hours on 2 and 3 June, between 7am and 8pm. They will return to normal opening hours on Saturday. Hours could vary from store-to-store, so check your local here.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s stores will most likely to open between 7am and 9pm, a reduction in normal hours. As the opening hours vary, check the store locator for the latest details.
Tesco
Tesco’s opening hours on 2 and 3 June will vary from store to store Customers are advised to check the opening times of their local store here. Stores will most likely opening at normal times, but close earlier at 8pm.
Waitrose & Partners
The majority of Waitrose stores will open from 8am to 6am, with some opening later. The retailer advises customers to check the Waitrose website for local store opening times.
What events are taking place?
Here is the full calendar of events taking place for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee:
- Bank Holiday – June 2: Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour): The colour will be trooped on Horse Guards Parade by the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards and more than 1,200 officers and soldiers from the Household Division who will put on a display. Sandringham and Balmoral will also be open for residents and visitors to enjoy the celebrations across the Bank Holiday.
- Platinum Jubilee Beacons: The UK will join the Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories to light a beacon to mark the Jubilee. The Principal Beacon will also be lit in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
- June 3: Service of Thanksgiving: The Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen’s reign will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral.
- June 4: Platinum Party at the Palace: Some of the world’s greatest entertainers are billed to perform at the concert at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the most significant moments from the Queen’s reign.
- June 5: Big Jubilee Lunch: Street parties are being planned across the UK and neighbours are expected to join together for food and fun to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. It will mark the end of the Bank Holiday.
- Platinum Jubilee Pageant: Performers will come together in London to tell the story of the Queen’s reign through a pageant that will include a “River of Hope” section made up of 200 silk flags that will make its way through The Mall, appearing like a moving river.
- July: The Royal Collection Trust: Three displays marking the Queen’s accession to the throne, the Coronation and Jubilees will be put on at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
