Emma Watson has spoken about an astrological event called “Saturn Return” – described by astrologer Lisa Stardust as a “cosmic entryway into adulthood”.

The actress took to Instagram in a rare personal post to mark her 33rd birthday, writing “Before 29 I hadn’t even heard of a Saturn Return as a concept. Let’s just say that now I am well acquainted.”

She went on to list a whole host of experiences from her past few years, including learning to surf, embarking on new business ventures, and family loss, suggesting that the period was transformative and thanking “the witches in my coven who were so pivotal in helping me arrive at where and who I am now.”

Saturn return has no proven basis in science. However, some people are guided by from horoscopes and star signs.

Astrological terms have become more common in popular culture over recent years, with stars like Caggie Dunlop from Made in Chelsea creating podcast Saturn Returns, and singer Avril Lavigne releasing song Mercury in Retrograde in 2022.

What is Saturn Return?

According to astrologer Aliza Kelly, Saturn Return is based on the duration of time it takes Saturn to orbit the sun. The personal astrological event happens when Saturn lands in the same place in the sky it did when you were born.

This typically happens at the time someone turns 29.

Kelly explains that Saturn is associated with time, regulations, and boundaries in the Zodiac calendar, and on a good day it can symbolise hard work and long-term accolades. However, on a bad day the planet can represent a harsh, critical and unforgiving symbol.

Due to the the themes of responsibility and hard work, those who follow astrology believe that Saturn represents the concept of coming of age.

The astrological belief seems to be a hit with a collection of celebrities, including Adele, who claimed in a Vogue cover shoot to have “lost the plot” during her “Saturn Return.”

Saying: “When that comes, it can rock your life. It shakes you up a bit: Who am I? What do I want to do? What makes me truly happy? All those things.”

When is my Saturn Return?

Saturn Return typically happens every 27 to 29.5 years – once when we’re a young adult, and then when we are in middle age, and finally in old age.

For those interested in playing around with their own chart, there are plenty of free online tools that calculate personal Saturn Return dates.

These often ask for your date and time of birth, and the city you were born in.
