The Spring bank holiday is on the horizon promising a long weekend break for many but it also means changes in opening times for some places including supermarkets.
A bank holiday is a national public holiday and a chance for some shop staff to take a well-earned break, which means many stores will be operating shorter opening hours.
Most major supermarkets will alter their opening and closing hours on Monday 27 May to account for the bank holiday.
We take a look which supermarkets are open and when over the bank holiday weekend.
Tesco
Tesco stores across the UK will remain open during the bank holiday weekend, but opening hours will vary depending on location and store type. Larger stores will be open from 8am – 8pm on bank holiday Monday in Scotland and from 7am – 11.59pm on the Monday in Northern Ireland.

Superstore opening hours
- Saturday 25 May: 7am to 10pm
- Sunday 26 May: 8am to 8pm

Morrisons
Stores will be open as normal on Saturday 25 May and Sunday 26 May. On Monday 27 May, supermarkets will be open between 7am and 8pm, with a few remaining open until 10pm.

- Monday 27 May: 7am to 8pm/10pm
Morrisons petrol stations will also be open from 7.30am until 8.30pm on bank holiday Monday. Check your local store’s opening hours here.
Asda
Asda opening hours will vary depending on different stores over the bank holiday weekend.
- Saturday 25 May: 6am to 12am (some open 24 hours)
- Sunday 26 May: 10am/11am to 4pm/5pm
- Monday 27 May: 6am to 12am (some open 24 hours)
Asda recommends shoppers check their local store’s opening hours here. After finding your chosen store, you should select the “holiday” option to find your local opening time.
Aldi
Over the weekend, Aldi stores opening times will be slightly altered.
- Saturday 25 May: 8am to 10pm
- Sunday 26 May: 10am to 4pm
- Monday 27 May: 8am to 8pm

Lidl
Lidl will also be open over the bank holiday weekend with stores opening between 7am and 8am and closing between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday.
Like other supermarkets, Lidl has shorter trading hour on Sunday from either from 10am (with 30 minutes browsing only) to 4pm or 11am to 5pm.

Co-op
As a convenience retailer, Co-op will open as normal over the bank holidays. There will be local variations, with some stores opening earlier and remaining open later. Larger Co-op stores (more than approximately 3,000 sq ft) will operate usual Sunday trading hours in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Sunday.

Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s supermarkets will be operating normal opening hours on Saturday and Sunday but there will be a slight change on bank holiday Monday. The Local stores will be open as usual from 7am to 11pm.

Waitrose will be open for usual trading hours on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Some Little Waitrose shops will open from 07:00 – 22:00.
