For Liam Payne’s 1.32 million Snapchat subscribers, it appeared to be another happy day in the life of a celebrity.
The One Direction star was in Argentina, posting breezy stories as he had throughout his two week holiday.
The last video he posted, shot in what looks like a countryside home, featured Payne saying that it was a “beautiful day in Argentina” and that he planned to play polo later.
“Today, we ride. We’re going to ride some horses,” Payne said in the video,
“Think I’m going to play polo again, which is going to put me out of action for about six weeks.”
Then, an hour after that post, it was announced that Payne had died, falling from the third story of a balcony of the Casa Sur Palermo hotel in Buenos Aires.
Police have confirmed that they had visited the hotel earlier acting on a call reporting an “aggressive man who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
The hotel manager can be heard on a call with police obtained by the Associated Press saying they had “a guest who is overwhelmed with drugs and alcohol…He’s destroying the entire room and, well, we need you to send someone, please.”
The manager’s voice became more anxious as the call went on, noting the room had a balcony.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, told local TV that authorities were investigating the circumstances of his death and conducting an autopsy.
The final Snapchat video, and all of the Snapchat posts published on Liam Payne’s account the day of Payne’s death, have now been deleted.
More than two weeks earlier Payne had shared a Snapchat story saying that he planned to travel to Argentina.
In the video Payne said that his travel plans were inspired, in part, due to his desire to visit his former bandmate Niall Horan, who was scheduled to perform in the country.
“It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We’ve got a lot to talk about and I would like to square up a couple things with the boy,” Payne said.
Payne was seen dancing at Niall Horan’s 2 October concert at Movistar Area in Buenos Aires, alongside his girlfriend, influencer Kate Cassidy.
Both Payne and Cassidy posted regularly to social media while travelling in Argentina.
Payne’s last photo in his Snapchat story was a selfie taken in the mirror. In it he posed alongside his girlfriend. Both were wearing swimwear.
It’s believed the videos and photographs posted on the day of Payne’s death were pre-recorded as they featured his girlfriend, who had flown back to Florida from South America a few days earlier.
