Soldier arrested after two teenage girls die in car crash

A serving soldier has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following the deaths of two teenage girls.

The 24-year-old man, confirmed by the Army as a serving soldier, has been arrested in connection with two offences of causing death by dangerous driving and two offences of causing death by

careless driving through drink or drugs and the offence of drink-driving.

He has been released on bail; until February 14, 2017.

Aspiring athletes run over as they trained

It comes after the deaths of teenagers Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows, who were struck down as they crossed a road in Aldershot, Hampshire on Tuesday evening.

The pair were aspiring athletes and had been out training on the evening they were killed.

Both were members of the Aldershot, Farnham and District (AFD) Athletic Club.

The family of 17-year-old Lucy, from Hartley Wintney said:”Lucy was an absolute joy to us and we feel lucky that she has been part of our family for 17 years.”

Team mates of both Lucy and 16-year-old Stacey from Farnborough have laid tributes at the crash scene.

Luke Wilton, 17, said: “They would represent the club nationally and for Hampshire. They were such admirable people. They were so bright, they had a bright future.”

While Alanna Goddard, also 17, said: “They were very good runners, very enthusiastic, not a bad bone in their body, just lovely, lovely girls, both of them.”

Even Olympian Eilish McColgan was moved by the tragedy tweeting: “Awful news coming from Aldershot this morning. Thoughts go out to family, friends and fellow team mates at AFD.”

Hampshire Police said the girls were hit by a black Ford Focus in Queen’s Avenue shortly after 7.10pm on Tuesday.

The family of 17-year-old Lucy, from Hartley Wintney said:”Lucy was an absolute joy to us and we feel lucky that she has been part of our family for 17 years.”

They had been training for a cross-country event in Spain next weekend.

Principal of Farnborough Sixth Form College Simon Jarvis confirmed the two girls were students there and said counsellors had been brought in to support students and staff.

Books of remembrance and condolence were being opened.

He said: “The thoughts and sympathies of the entire college community are with the families and friends of the two girls who have experienced this terrible loss.”
