[en] Studies performed by the Birmingham group since 1979 are reviewed. They include ion association reactions and isotope exchange reactions. A more detailed account of this work is given in other papers of the same seminar and elsewhere. (G.Q.)

[en] In this paper we discuss briefly the nature of electron attachment processes in nonpolar liquids, the effect of the attaching gas molecule itself and the electron state on the attachment rate constant, and the relation of electron attachment processes in nonpolar liquids to those in gases. [en] There is no nuclear program in Alberta, nor are there any plans for one. Large resources of economically minable coal will set the pattern for future power development in Alberta. However, increasing environmental controls are becoming more difficult and expensive. Acid rain control measures may make the nuclear route economical in western Canada, but at this stage nuclear power may not be as attractive economically in Alberta as in Ontario. Coal and nuclear power will become increasingly important factors in energy production as world petroleum reserves decline over the long term

AbstractAbstract
[en] The primary contribution of statistics to risk assessment is in the estimation of probabilities. Frequently the probabilities in question are small, and their estimation is particularly difficult. The authors consider three examples illustrating some problems inherent in the estimation of small probabilities

AbstractAbstract
[en] Unit First Operators are key individuals in the overall reliability and safety of a nuclear power plant. To permit them to fulfil their duties it is encumbent on everyone to consider their needs. Such consideration involves an adequate description of their role, implementation of a high quality training program, elimination of complexity in design, and analysis of their errors to determine the underlying causes

AbstractAbstract
[en] A model is proposed for a method of assigning a value to danger. Because safety is almost never the total purpose of any undertaking, competition is often perceived between contributions to wealth and to safety. Danger is implicitly assigned a dollar value. The author discusses measure concepts, empirical problems, the role of expert and lay valuations, and resource markets for safety and for consumption
