AbstractAbstract
[en] The basic physical limitations on the parameters of FELs installed on storage rings are described. The prospects of these devices and projects of dedicated storage rings for FELs are discussed. It was found that the gap in power between the existing FELs at storage rings and those of the near future is four orders of magnitude. (R.P.) 27 refs

[en] The concept of 'insertion devices' for storage rings is overviewed. The first Wiggler magnet constructed expressly for synchrotron-radiation research was commissioned in 1978. The main features of insertion devices are summarized, also in the framework of the synchrotron radiation properties. (R.P.) 26 refs.; 7 figs.; 1 tab

AbstractAbstract
[en] The ion beam entering the RFQ must have a large slope at the entrance aperture. This makes matching by means of electrical or magnetic lenses difficult. A new scheme of ion optics is proposed for the entrance region of the RFQ, in order to avoid beam losses, to reduce the diameter of the entrance aperture, and to relax the matching conditions required from the ion injector. Numerical simulations are presented and different configurations for achieving this matching are proposed. (R.P.) 6 refs.; 4 figs

AbstractAbstract
[en] The effects of the beam-plasma interaction on a finite radial and transversal conductor was studied. The resonances for different density profiles at the plasma and beam were obtained at different temperatures. The method is based on the Vlasov-Maxwell system equations with first order perturbations. The discussions were restricted to the adiabatic regime. (author) 6 refs.; 2 figs

[en] The Free Electron Laser for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) has produced the first laser radiation in the summer of 1991. This made FELIX the first infrared FEL in Europe to come on the air. Results obtained during the first half year of operation, such as measurements of the output power, tunability, the spectrum, and the stability, in relation with the performance of the electron accelerator are described. [en] Design and experimental studies are now under way to develop a 150 MW relativistic klystron at 14 GHz as a possible RF power source for the linear collider VLEPP. The present status of this work and the design parameters of the klystron are reported. Preliminary test results are presented. (R.P.) 3 refs.; 5 figs.; 3 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] A survey of control systems at national accelerator facilities shows that in-house, bottoms-up developments have had varying degrees of success, largely dependent on the level of effort invested. New laboratories and projects continue to develop their own systems, although some collaborations have been initiated. Smaller laboratories with limited resources are not likely to find satisfying solutions by emulating the larger labs. A new trend is underway whereby software and hardware experience and developments from larger national labs are incorporated in carefully planned systems for smaller facilities. (author)
