[en] The evolution of laser fusion systems started with a description of the basic principles of the laser in 1959, then a physical demonstration showing 1000 Watts of peak optical power in 1961 to the present systems that deliver 1014 watts of peak optical power, are presented. Physical limits to large systems are reviewed: thermal limits, material stress limits, structural limits and stability, parasitic coupling, measurement precision and diagnostics. [en] The present objective of the US ICF (Inertial Confinement Fusion) Program is to determine the scientific feasibility of compressing and heating a small mass of mixed deuterium and tritium to conditions at which fusion occurs and significant energy is released. The demonstration of ignition and modest gain is the necessary step in establishing the feasibility of ICF. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is designed to achieve these goals. The facility will consist of a 12-beamline, high-power, neodymium-doped glass ('Nd:glass') laser of advanced, cost-effective design and a target experiment area capable of safely containing the proposed experiments. 4 figs., 9 refs
