AbstractAbstract
[en] An ultrasonic technique for the estimation of residual acrylamide monomer during the polymerization of aqueous acrylamide solution has been investigated. Polyacrylamide gel medium serves as a sensitive medium for detection and dosimetry of fast and thermal neutrons. This technique is based on the fact that the velocity of ultrasonic wave increases with the increase in elasticity due to polymerization. The percentage of residual acrylamide monomer is estimated using ultraviolet spectrophotometric analysis. The ultrasonic velocity is correlated with the residual monomer concentration

AbstractAbstract
[en] Reference defects are used in non-destructive testing (NDT) for the calibration of ultrasonic and Eddy current test requirement. The size and shapes of reference defects vary according to the size of the object examined and the sensitivity of detection desired. This paper describes the development work carried out in the manufacturing and inspection techniques used to machine reference defects on the inside and outside surfaces of a small bore stainless steel tube which is to be used as a calibration standard for ultrasonic examination of a similar tubes. [en] X-ray diffraction has been used as a tool to characterize Bi2S3, PbS, CdS and their alloy films. Nickel silicide films grown on silicon substrate have also been characterized for their phase identification. It has been found that Ni3Si2 phase grows even at low temperature in presence of some impurities in the film. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Material samples can be obtained from a tubular component by a sliver sample scraping technique without affecting integrity and residual service life of an operating system. These samples may be used for chemical analysis and determination of material properties, dimensional deviations, corrosion and microstructure. This information could provide an indication of remaining useful life of a component. This paper highlights the developmental goals, qualification of sliver sample scraping technique, typical profiles of sliver samples, determination of operating parameters, and evaluation of scraped regions and sliver samples. AbstractAbstract
[en] The objective of this paper is to analyse the existing energy system of Bangladesh and its testing inspection and maintenance needs under varying conditions and to examine the safety considerations of in-service welding, complexity evaluation of NDT application and applicability of alternative methods. A case study for such application is also included. Indications are also made about the preparatory needs in meeting future demand in terms of manpower, technology, equipment and activities by the turn of the century, so far as the bodies operating in these sectors are concerned. This is done keeping in view of the fact that NDT area is not in a static condition as sophisticated equipment, improved procedures and new innovations keep springing up. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Through reliable Non Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT and E) methods, if the health of a component can be assessed and its remaining life is evaluated, then it is possible to extend the life of such a component. This paper discusses about the assessment of degradation of a conical inlet of a Waste Heat Boiler in a chemical plant. Results obtained through various NDT recommendations for rectification of the component are also discussed. (author)
