AbstractAbstract
[en] The phase transition to reflection asymmetric intrinsic nuclear shapes at high angular momentum is analyzed in the framework of the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation, with the Gogny interaction, using approximate parity projection before variation. The N=88 isotones are studied and good agreement is found for the energy splitting of the even and odd parity states and B (E1)/B(E2) transition probabilities. Differences on dipole moments between odd and even parity states found at low spin disappear with increasing angular momentum. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The mechanisms of complex fragment production in central and semi-central heavy-ion collisions are studied using molecular dynamics and a prompt statistical multifragmentation model. In the framework of these models, we discuss recent contradictory experimental analyses which suggest dynamical and statistical pictures for complex fragment emission. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Recent experiments in cavity QED have allowed the monitoring of the decoherence process, which is at heart of the quantum theory of measurement and plays an essential role in the classical limit of quantum mechanics. An important ingredient of these experiments is the ability to probe the quantum state of the electromagnetic field in a cavity, and to distinguish a coherent superposition of two distinct coherent states of the field from a statistical mixture of the same states. After reviewing some of the methods recently developed to measure the quantum state of the electromagnetic field, it is shown here that the technique of Ramsey interferometry central to those experiments, may be used to determine completely the quantum state of an electromagnetic field in a cavity. This new method, which allows the direct measurement of the Wigner function of the field, is a useful tool for probing the quantum-classical transition and, in particular, the decoherence of superpositions of distinguishable coherent states of the electromagnetic field in the cavity. AbstractAbstract
[en] The scissors-like magnetic dipole excitations, know to be peculiar to deformed nuclei are first investigated. Its collective properties, like close correlation with the ground state quadrupole collectivity, are analysed in a unified context which encompasses semiclassical, algebraic and schematic models. Its single particle features, like the fragmentation of the M1 strength, are described in random-phase approximation and in the quasiparticle-phonon nuclear model. The properties of the spin excitations in deformed nuclei are also discussed. Finally, the effect of deformation on orbital and spin magnetic quadrupole transitions in heavy nuclei investigated. [en] A semiclassical description of multiple giant resonance excitation and decay that incorporates incoherent fluctuations contributions of the Brink-Axel type is developed. Numerical calculations show that the incoherent contributions are important at low to intermediate bombarding energies. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We propose a soluble model to incorporate the nonlinear effects in the transition probabilities of the multiphonon Giant Dipole Resonances based on the SU(1,1) algebra. Analytical expressions for the multi-phonon transition probabilities are derived. For reasonably small magnitude of nonlinearity x ∼ 0.1 - 0.2 enhancement factor for the Double Giant Resonance excitation probabilities and the cross sections reaches values 1.3 - 2 compatible with experimental data. AbstractAbstract
[en] The current status of research on the Isoscalar Giant Dipole Resonances (ISGDR) is reviewed. Recent small-angle inelastic alpha scattering measurements have provided the best evidence so far for this resonance. The most recent data indicate that the ISGDR strength is spread over a large excitation-energy range, rather than being concentrated in a peak. The implications of the ISGDR results for nuclear incompressibility are discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] I discuss imaging sources from low relative-velocity correlations in heavy-ion reactions. When the correlation is dominated by interference, we can obtain the images by Fourier transforming the correlation function. In the general case, we may use the method of optimized discretization. This method stabilizes the inversion by adapting the resolution of the source to the experimental error and to the measured velocities. The imaged sources contain information on freeze-out density, phase-space density, and resonance decays, among other things. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Properties of the self consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (SCQRPA) are discussed, and its differences with the standard quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) are emphasized. As an exactly soluble example, the dynamics of Fermi transitions in the O(5) model is discussed. From the comparison with the exact results we conclude that SCQRPA works well up to the transition point. (author)
