AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper analyses the performance of parallel beam X-ray transmission computerized tomography, in the characterization of melting defects on a aluminium alloy. The results obtained presented a spatial resolution approximately of 0.8 mm. The porosity distribution existent in the piece appears as noise at the tomographic images with impossible detection. From the tomograms analyses it was possible to classify two defect regions at the pieces: empty and large pore concentration

[en] This paper presents the development of a three dimensional tomography system based on a system of real time radiography. The system uses an microfocus X-ray tube with 10 μm focus size, maximum 160 kVp voltage and 1 mA current, normally used in on-line inspection. Also is presented the determination of the basic parameters of image quality and of the system, and sone applications in problems related with the industry

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this work a ceramic filters analysis is done through the microtomography for improvement of the aluminium melting process through the filter porosity control. Microtomography were obtained of ceramic filters with pore dimensions of 10, 20 and 30 ppi. The data were calculated by using an reconstruction algorithm for divergent beam implemented in the Nuclear Instrumentation Laboratory of COPPE/UFRJ and analysed through cells and windows separation according to the defined by Ray. For the analyses the Image Pro program were used where the cells have been detached by sphere inserted, adjusting by nine points, in the filter cavities. So, the size of the answer sphere were considered as the cell size. The windows were measured by straight lines secant to the window intersections

AbstractAbstract
[en] Industrial radiography is a nondestructive test method that makes use of ionizing radiation, requiring the adoption of adequate radiation safety measures. Radiation protection systems adopted for industrial radiography operations must take into account radiological workers as well as members of the public. The importance of this concern increases in construction sites, oil refineries, process plants and offshore installations. In such cases, industrial radiography of several thousand welded joints may be required while members of the public are working in other construction activities nearby. An analysis was performed on radiation safety standards adopted in industrial radiography operations in construction sites. Following a critical review, performance specifications were developed for a portable radiation-shielding device to be used in gamma radiography of pipe welds. Prototypes were designed, built and tested under actual construction site conditions, performing successfully. The radiation-shielding devices were developed to fit specific pipe sizes. A support system is designed to clamp to the pipe joint under examination. A collimator and a shield are permanently attached to this support system, according to optimum geometric arrangements of source, weld and film, intended to improve radiographic quality and to reduce setup and exposure times. The special-purpose collimator is penetrated by the isotope source, shielding radiation in all directions, except for the solid angle corresponding to the film. The shield, placed behind the film, covers that solid angle, ensuring that radiation is properly shielded in all directions. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Lifetime extension of nuclear power plants became an important topic and resulted in the requirement of advanced safety management tools. Therefore, the improvement of existing methods of nondestructive testing techniques and the application of innovative procedures contribute to improve safety and reliability of the primary circuit boundary. Especially, advanced techniques for the nondestructive evaluation of austenitic pipes of pressurized nuclear reactors are necessary for the documentation of the integrity of the components. The Institute for Nuclear Engineering and Nondestructive Testing (IKPH) at the University of Hanover has developed an eddy current system with the emphasis on detecting stress corrosion cracks in the ground material of austenitic pipes. The development shows the application of the remote field eddy current technique for the inspection of austenitic pipes from outside. Damages in the pipework could be caused by stress corrosion cracking resulting out of the mechanical loads combined with the corrosive effects of the coolant medium. The pipings concerned are austenitic bents in the primary coolant system of a pressurized water reactor. The grade of the pipes is Nb-stabilized chromium-nickel steel X 10 CrNiNb 18 9; ident. No. 1.4550; ASI 347 having a diameter of 219.1 mm and a wall thickness of 21.3 mm. The project also comprises a computer aided remote field probe design and the experimental verification of the realized sensor systems. The application of FEM-Programs for the numerical calculation of the magnetic fields gives important information about the distribution of the eddy currents within the material. This leads to an optimized probe design in order to archive deep penetrating eddy current fields within the material. Furthermore, the realization of the testing system comprises advanced methods of signal processing for the classification of the eddy current signals. (author)
