AbstractAbstract
[en] A novel bismuth base sealing alloys is provided which has a high affinity for and close contact with stainless steel even in the solidified state, to be used as a construction material for the rotatable plug in nuclear fuel replacement. The alloy consists of 60% to 64% by weight of bismuth, 17% to 21% of tin and 17% to 21% of indium, or, alternately, consists of 58% to 62% of bismuth, 21% to 25% of tin, 4% to 8% of indium and 9% to 13% of lead. In the Bi-Sn-In alloy, the melting point is 840+-50C. In the Bi-Sn-In-Pb alloy, the melting point is 640+-50C. Both alloys show an extremely close contact boundary in photographs. The lead in the Bi-Sn-In-Pb alloy is substituted for a part of the indium in the Bi-Sn-In alloy without deteriorating its sealability and acid resistance. (Iwakiri, K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Short samples of BiSCCO-2223/Ag-alloy 55-filament tapes have been studied by transport techniques at 77 K. The nominal critical current Ic of the tapes was 40 A (77 K, self-field). By using multiple current and voltage taps on the sample, it was possible to assess the conductor inhomogeneity on a scale of a few millimetres. A scatter of up to 50% in the values of both the critical current Ic and the voltage-current characteristic power law, α, was observed, but with significant correlation between the two. This suggests that the inhomogeneity is caused mainly by cracks in the filaments, which the current has to bypass via the normal metal of the matrix. The effect on the transport properties of superconducting connections between filaments was studied using a simple numerical model. We have developed an experimental protocol for detection of these interconnections and their assessment. The estimated critical current density of the interconnections is an order of magnitude lower than that of the filaments Jc, and the power law of their V(I) characteristic is low. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The discussion concerns the origin of the giant Faraday rotation in bismuth- and lead-doped iron garnets. It is convincingly shown that this effect is due to the covalent admixture of Bi(Pb)6p-wavefunctions to oxygen 2p-orbitals in octahedral and tetrahedral Fe-O clusters of iron garnets. The crucial role of the quantum-chemical computation of electronic structure of such clusters is emphasized. (reply)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Contactless electroreflectance is applied to study the band gap (E0) and spin-orbit splitting (ΔSO) in InP1−xBix alloys with 0 < x ≤ 0.034. The E0 transition shifts to longer wavelengths very significantly (−83 meV/% Bi), while the E0 + ΔSO transition shifts very weakly (−13 meV/% Bi) with the rise of Bi concentration. These changes in energies of optical transitions are discussed in the context of the valence band anticrossing model and ab initio calculations. Shifts of E0 and E0 + ΔSO transitions, obtained within ab-initio calculations, are −106 and −20 meV per % Bi, respectively, which is in a good agreement with experimental results

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new Bi-Sb gradient crystal growth technique is developed which combine Czochralski method with a melt feed with solid antimony. Bi-Sb single crystals with antimony content variation along the length from 0 to 17.6 at.% and with a gradient of crystal lattice parameter up to 0.972 %/cm are grown. A study is made into antimony distribution along the length of gradient single crystals grown using the method of electron probe microanalysis as well as X-ray diffraction study of interplanar distance varying. It is established that an increase of melt height in the crucible results in a decrease of Sb distribution nonuniformity in Bi-Sb gradient single crystals. The calculation of Rayleigh number shows that a decrease of Sb distribution nonuniformity can result from an increase of the intensity of melt convective mixing

Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] In a recent paper, Zenkov and Moskvin (2002 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 14 6957) analysed the influence of bismuth on magneto-optical effects in iron garnets, questioning the validity of previous approaches (Dionne and Allen 1993 J. Appl. Phys. 73 6127; 1994 J. Appl. Phys. 75 6372, Allen and Dionne 1993 J. Appl. Phys. 73 1630, Helseth et al2001 Phys. Rev. 64 174406). In this comment I point out that these claims apparently have no foundation. (comment)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Highlights: • Experimental literature shows significant disagreement over the βSn solidus line. • The βSn solidus line has been re-measured in Sn-Bi system. • Study illustrates the importance of the homogenisation step in solidus measurements. • Recommended values for the βSn solidus line have been provided. - Abstract: Sn-Bi is an industrially important system that is often incorporated into multicomponent solder alloys. Despite a large body of experimental work, the reported data are in significant disagreement over the βSn solidus line and maximum solubility of Bi in βSn. These inconsistencies are often adopted in thermodynamic assessments and databases and might result in the incorrect design of Bi-containing solders. The present study re-measures the βSn solidus line using DSC techniques, explores the origin of the inconsistencies in past measurements, and provides recommended values. The work highlights the importance of the equilibration methods used for solidus measurements and discusses methods to test for full homogenisation.
