AbstractAbstract
[en] The article presents the findings of aeropalynological research on the urban ecosystem of Ivano-Frankivsk City (the Precarpathian Region, Western Ukraine) over the spring period of 2013. The following pollen grains were observed to dominate in the aeropalynological spectrum of the city: Corylus and Alnus (in March and the first half of April), Carpinus, Betula and Populus (in the second half of April), and Pinaceae (in May). The analysis involved the pollination onset, peak and cessation in the abovementioned taxa as well as the regularities in pollen concentration dynamics with regard to the meteorological situation in the city. The findings show a significant effect of predominant wind directions on the development of the aeropalynological situation in the city. Pollen concentrations of the following taxa were found to exceed the clinically important threshold value: Corylus and Alnus pollen, during four pollination days; Carpinus and Betula, during twelve days. This indicates the necessity for systematic aeropalynological monitoring in the city.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Pollens and seeds of Hypoestes and Rhinacanthus collected from different field localities in Taiz and Soqotra Island, Yemen were investigated by using light and scanning electron microscopes. Pollen grains of Hypoestes were prolate in equatorial view, lobate trigonal to lobate circular in polar view whereas those of Rhinacanthus were sub spheroidal and rounded trigonal in polar view. The aperture was tricolporate and exine ornamentation was coarsely reticulate for all species in the two genera. Scanning electron microscopy and morphological observations showed that mature dry seeds of Hypoestes and Rhinacanthus have various sizes and shapes, the surface ornamentations observed were reticulate to cristate, an addition to the tuberculum and papillae. The three Hypoestes species differ in the seed structure which are useful for identification and their high structural diversity provides an important taxonomic value for species differentiation. [en] The reproductive biology of Fagonia indica Burm. f. (Zygophyllaceae) reveals that it is a facultative autogamous taxon i.e. predominantly self-fertilized but also gets benefit by crossing as normal seed set was observed in both selfing and crossing. Values of pollen ovule ratio did not show the positive correlation with breeding system. Opening and closing timings of flower govern by temperature and light intensity. An initiated bud required about 19-21 days to convert into a mature fruit. The flower simultaneously serve as primary as well as secondary attractant as it offers nectar, floral odor, waxes and glowing colour, due to which a variety of insects regularly visited the flower. AbstractAbstract
[en] Breeding system and pollination biology of Paeonia delavayi (Peaoniaceae) from Shangri-La, Yunnan Province, southwest of China were studied. Flowering phenologies and flower visitors were observed or collected from 2008 to 2011. The pollen viability, stigma receptivity and pollination efficiency of different visitors were detected and tested. The florescence lasted for 6- 9d in a single flower from mid-May to late June. A high percentage of flower damage promoted early anther dehiscence. Flowers started disseminating pollen at 1-2 d after flowering, and lasted for 5-6 d. Pollen viability could be preserved for more than 10 d at normal temperature. High seed rate from the stigma was observed at 1 d before flowering to 3d after flowering, and the dissemination hysteresis was defined as protogyny. The P/O ratios were 6,124 to 9,713:1, suggesting that the larger quantity of pollen to increased the seed setting rate. Three species of bees, eight species of beetles, seven species of syrphid flies, four species of ants, and three species of butterflies were observed on the flowers. P. delavayi rewarded to the visitors by releasing fragrance, providing pollen and nectar. On the bodies of the visitors under stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM), much pollen from the plants of similar flowering period inner community were found which indicated that these incompatible visitors were not species-specific pollinators. The bagging experiments showed that P. delavayi was selfincompatible and no apomixes. Anemophily only played a minor role in the fertilization. A few seeds with poor plumpness can be produced by geitonogamy. Seed setting rate of artificial xenogamy was higher than natural pollination. Artificial control of the visitors' species showed bees being the most important pollinators. Beetles and ants participated in pollination to someextent and were unstable. Syrphid flies and butterflies were very unreliable with low pollination efficiency. Reproductive success depended largely on cross-pollination assisted by pollinator activities, especially the bees. AbstractAbstract
[en] A model of pollination that considers the amount of geitonogamous pollen transfer in different flowers and plants is presented. We assumed in this work self-incompatible plant species and we studied how pollination is affected by different round trips described by pollinator from its nest, taking into account the fraction geitonogamy and the fraction pollen export. A deterministic model and a stochastic model of pollen transfer were developed from which we found that when pollinators describe a uniform sequence (visit the same number of flowers in each plant), individuals receive the maximum outcross pollen or minimum self pollen. That is, from the point of view of fertilization, the optimal number of flowers visited in each plant depends on the number of flowers of the plant, the length of the visit and the number of individuals. AbstractAbstract
[en] We present two reconstructions of annual average temperature over temperate North America: a tree-ring based reconstruction at decadal resolution (1200–1980 CE) and a pollen-based reconstruction at 30 year resolution that extends back to 480 CE. We maximized reconstruction length by using long but low-resolution pollen records and applied a three-tier calibration scheme for this purpose. The tree-ring-based reconstruction was calibrated against instrumental annual average temperatures on annual and decadal scale, it was then reduced to a lower resolution, and was used as a calibration target for the pollen-based reconstruction. Before the late-19th to the early-21st century, there are three prominent low-frequency periods in our extended reconstruction starting at 480 CE, notably the Dark Ages cool period (about 500–700 CE) and Little Ice Age (about 1200–1900 CE), and the warmer medieval climate anomaly (MCA; about 750–1100 CE). The 9th and the 11th century are the warmest centuries and they constitute the core of the MCA in our reconstruction, a period characterized by centennial-scale aridity in the North American West. These two warm peaks are slightly warmer than the baseline period (1904–1980), but nevertheless much cooler than temperate North American temperatures during the early-21st century. (letter)

[en] In this study, the pollen grains of eight different mulberry types in I.spir and Pazaryolu districts of Erzurum were tested for the determination of viability, germination rates, pollen production levels and morphologically homogeneity. Viability of the pollens was determined by TTC (2, 3, 5-triphenly tetrazolium chlorid) and IKI (iodine + potassium iodide) tests. Pollen germination experiments were performed with Agar-plate (1%) method in sucrose solutions of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% concentrations. In addition, pollen production and morphologically homogeneity were determined by the Hemacytometric method. The pollen viability of all types used in this study was obtained in high ratios. Pollen germination rates were the highest for 15% and 20% sucrose solutions. The highest pollen production level was obtained from the genotype 6. The morphologically homogeneity levels of pollens changed from 97.36 to 98.86% in types. (author)

[en] The different vegetation types of the last climatic cycle, well recorded in pollen sequences, may give a good idea of the variability of the continental biosphere. Interglacial, glacial, interstadial and interphasic vegetations characteristics for the European subcontinent are described. The two possible approaches to paleoclimates from pollen analytical data are presented: present-day taxa distribution, ancient pollen spectra. Principles, drawbacks and use of the nearest analogue approach are detailed and in particular, the loading factor technique, which enables to minimize the disturbing effect of man's impact, is described. Climate reconstructions (annual and seasonal parameters) from european sequences are briefly discussed
