[en] A study is made of the effects of fusion-produced α particles on magnetic plasma fluctuations. It is found generally that α particles cannot provide an effective amplification of wave packets. (UK)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The recently reported detection of helium (albeit minuscule) with equivalent heat production using an electrochemical process at the University of Texas and at the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake were both attributed to intracrystalline nuclear fusion, which again brings to the fore this most controversial of subjects. However unlikely this fusion process, it is contended that an electrochemical process is particularly unsuited to the task of substantiating intracrystalline nuclear fusion because simultaneous thermochemical processes are occurring that can overshadow possible modest nuclear processes. Moreover, the presence in the electrolyte of extraneous reagents such as dissolved oxygen and salts further complicates interpretation of results. In this paper in light of these observations, an investigative method utilizing deuteron implantation with concurrent spectrometric analysis of reaction products is proposed

AbstractAbstract
[en] This study considers a TFTR-sized plasma operating on a long cycle. The temperature profile is fixed in time, and the plasma is not refuelled. In order to isolate the electric field effects, this last condition is extended to prohibit the electric field at the plasma edge from returning more fuel to the plasma than gradient-driven forces expel

AbstractAbstract
[en] Equations are presented for determining the alpha particle range as a function of energy and the average atomic number of the material. The general form of the equations is as follows: Rsub(p) = f(Z, E) = a - b(E - c)2 + [-d + c(E+ f)2] log [g - h(E - k)sup(Z + 2)] where Rsub(p) is the alpha particle range (in mg/cm2), Z the atomic number, E the energy of alpha particles (in MeV), and a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, k are constants. AbstractAbstract
[en] New results on the registration properties of α-recoil tracks (α-RTs) in mica are reported. Several of the conclusions of an early paper by Huang and Walker (1967) in this field are found to be questionable. It is concluded that, though potentially possessing a number of advantages, the α-RT technique cannot at present be reliably used either for age determination in archaeology and geology or for palaeothermometry. AbstractAbstract
[en] It is sometimes necessary that targets be prepared to a close thickness tolerance. The alpha ray energy loss method provides one means of easily measuring thicknesses absolutely to an accuracy of several percent. A review of the method and its uses is presented. The calculations required can sometimes become quite involved, but, in most cases, the accuracy obtained is worth the effort. The method should be used only where it is easily applied or where the accuracy is required for experimental reasons or for instance in the calibration of other less absolute measuring devices

AbstractAbstract
[en] Turbulent diffusion in a plasma containing a group of high-energy ions is considered. It has been supposed that in the plasma waves are excited which interact resonantly with electrons and high-energy ions and adiabatically with the main ions. As the general case the plasma is taken with a radial electric field. Turbulent fluxes of electrons and high-energy ions are shown to be directed outside of the plasma column, and those of main ions inside it. Such a character of the turbulent diffusion is violated at the boundary of the plasma column that leading to a rise of a radial electric field near the boundary; the magnitude of the field is evaluated. Criteria of existence of anomalous diffusion of particles are studied. As an example the results obtained are considered as applied to a thermonuclear plasma

AbstractAbstract
[en] An improved method to determine the thickness of thin toils, in the region of several μg cm-2 to several mg cm-2 by measuring the energy loss of α-particles traversing these foils is described. The method is particularly sensitive for monoenergetic α-particles of low energy. Using a simple experimental arrangement and applying a modified slightly asymmetrical Gaussian fit to the measured peaks, sensitivities in the determination of areal densities of a few tenths of a μg cm-2 can be obtained.
