AbstractAbstract
[en] In Belt-Pinch IIa, highly elongated equilibria with poloidal beta values up to the aspect ratio have been achieved. In these tokamak-like configurations, no fast-growing MHD instabilities such as external kink and ballooning modes have been observed. Rigid displacement instabilities have been stabilized by an appropriate poloidal magnetic field configuration and by a conducting shell. By comparing simulation experiments using the Garching high-beta transport code with measurements, it has been found that in the collision-dominated plasma no anomalously enhanced transport occurs. Transport theory in the Pfirsch-Schlueter regime, which includes elongation and high-beta effects, has been confirmed by the experiment. In particular, it has been shown that the perpendicular electrical conductivity is also classical. Detailed investigations of oxygen and carbon impurity losses demonstrated that the impurity subprograms commonly used for tokamaks underestimate the radiation losses in the range Tsub(e)=10 to 30 eV. AbstractAbstract
[en] In a Belt-Pinch device a hot, high-β-plasma is produced by the method of fast shock-compression. For this heating method the radial equilibrium depends upon the time evolution of the fast rising magnetic fields outside the plasma. A simple mathematical model for plasma compression and relaxation toward radial equilibrium in the case β = 1 including the external electric circuit is presented in this paper. The numerical solution for different experimental parameters leads to information on values of these parameters for reaching a radial equilibrium. For the plasma compression a snowplow-bounce-model is used which gives the initial values for the equations of the relaxation phase. In this phase the plasma is described by three thin sheaths containing the total mass of the plasma, whose motions are damped by viscosity terms. (orig.) 891 HT/orig. 892 HIS

AbstractAbstract
[en] The analytic model of one-dimensional belt pinch equilibria is presented. The MHD equilibria are classified into three types from the analysis of experimental field profiles. The belt pinch plasma with the uniform current density is surrounded by (a) the vacuum magnetic field, (b) the uniform force-free current layer or (c) the decaying force-free current layer. The model of current distribution which describes systematically these cases is given, and the formula of the equilibrium fields and current distributions are calculated analytically. The formula fit well to the experimental profiles. The origin of different types of equilibria is also discussed. (author)
