AbstractAbstract
[en] The representation of plasma impedance of gas laser discharge and spark gap channels by an inductance-capacitance parallel tank circuit has been useful in describing the frequency response of a pulsed super radiant laser charging circuit. The impedance matching of these circuits can lead to resonant narrowing of the laser pulse width in super radiant nitrogen lasers. Previous work provides the means to calculate the inductance and capacitance in terms of the plasma and discharge circuits parameters. Conjugating this model with the pulse width narrowing via plasma impedance matching, the electron density at the very moment of lasing in a super radiant gas laser channel can be estimated by using the measured inductance and capacitance. AbstractAbstract
[en] OHTE is expected to be an improvement over the reversed field pinch in that the stabilizing reversal of edge toroidal field is augmented by external helical windings rather than totally relying on a dynamo effect. Reactors should be characterized by high power density, small size, moderate magnetic fields, room temperature coils, and ohmic heating to ignition. Five reactors have been studied self-consistently using a comprehensive systems code developed at General Atomic. It is shown that the development increments requird for OHTE commercialization are smaller and lower plants cost than for tokamaks, and that commerical plants should be economically and technically attractive

AbstractAbstract
[en] An assessment is made of the size of magnetic fields occurring spontaneously in laser plasma and their effect on physical processes in the plasma. It is demonstrated that in all the cases examined, saturation of the magnetic field should take place in such a way that the relation between the cyclotron frequency of electron rotation in the magnetic field and the frequency of collision does not exceed a magnitude of the order of the unit. AbstractAbstract
[en] Survivability of cryogenic targets in single-shot and reactor cavity environments is an essential prerequisite for high gain (> 25) target experimentation, target development, and power production. Heat sources in a gas-filled light ion beam cavity include radiative, convective, and viscous heating by the cavity fill gas, heating due to laser radiation used to initiate low-density plasma channels for beam propagation, and heating due to ohmic dissipation of channel currents near the target. Prior to injection of the target into the cavity, tritium decay and target acceleration are the sources of heat. In this paper the parametric dependence, time scale, and magnitude of each of these thermal sources are discussed. Potential thermal protection techniques which may be applicable to long (> 0.1 s), intermediate (approx. ms), and short-duration (approx. μs) heat loads are described, and remaining concerns are noted

AbstractAbstract
[en] An analysis is made of the stability of the imhomogeneous state of a flat discharge in a thermal plasma with a rising temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity sigma(T). For the case of a power dependence of sigma(T) and for conditions where, in the base state, the vectors of the electrical current and the heat flux are mutually orthogonal, the stability of a bounded plasma with respect to three-dimensional perturbations was investigated. On the basis of an exact solution of the boundary-value problem, the existence of neutral two-dimensional and three-dimensional perturbations, branching-off from the base state in the incident section of the volt-ampere characteristic, was established. An investigation was made of the spectrum of the one-dimensional perturbations in a discharge with an external ohmic load, and the possibility of the supression of such perturbations with a sufficiently large value of the load is shown. Attention must be drawn to the possibility, in principle, of the appearance of three-dimensional steady-state structures in the region of linear instability
