[en] This work is a study of the reactions within liquid bromine trifluoride, between an alkaline fluoride and uranium tetrafluoride. It uses conductimetric and cryoscopic measurements. Our work is in five parts: 1. General information: methods of analysis and preparation of BrF3; 2. Conductimetric measurements in BrF3; 3. Cryoscopic study in BrF3; 4. Solid-state study of the precipitates obtained by the mutual reaction of M[BrF4] and UF4; 5. Summary and conclusions. (author)

Ce travail est une etude sur les reactions au sein du trifluorure de brome liquide, entre un fluorure alcalin et le tetrafluorure d'uranium. [en] The method of differential thermal analysis has been used to investigate solid-liquid equilibria in the systems ClF5-BF3 and BrF5-BF3 in the whole range of concent-- rations of components. No formation of chemical compounds is found. BrF5-BF3 system refers to the series of simple systems of the eutectic type and is characterized by eutectics depleted in bromine pentafluoride content (less than 5 mol. %) with the melting temperature close to melting temperature of pure boron trifluoride. In the ClF5-BF3 system components are mutually insoluble in both liquid and solid states

AbstractAbstract
[en] The infrared intensities (and wavenumbers) for the fundamental vibrations of ClF5, BrF5, and IF5 have been predicted, using an atomic polar tensor for the F atom transferred from the CH3F molecule, together with matrices obtained from the normal coordinate analysis of each molecule. The procedure used in these predictions has been described previously in detail for the prediction of infrared intensities of SF6 and UF6. Comparison of the calculated intensities with the experimental spectra of XF5 molecules reveals that the predicted values are in fairly good agreement with the experimental values. The model and procedure allow prediction of intensities of binary combination and overtone bands as well as fundamental vibrations. The comparison between prediction and experiment is presented in some detail, and some reasons for the (relatively few) apparent discrepancies are discussed

[en] Alkali and alkaline earth metal tetrafluorobromates M"IBrF_4, M"I"I(BrF_4)_2 (M"I = Na-Cs, M"I"I = Sr, Ba) can be synthesized from the respective fluorides and BrF_3. By the reaction of CsF with an excess of BrF_3, the compound cesium tetrafluoridobromate(III) bromine trifluoride (1/1), CsBr_2F_7 (1), was obtained in the form of a colorless powder and as single crystals. Shown by X-ray diffraction on single crystals, its Br_2F_7"- anion is neither planar, nor is its Br-μ-F-Br unit linear, as previously deduced by Raman spectroscopy. In stoichiometric reactions of CsF with BrF_3, the compound cesium tetrafluoridobromate(III), CsBrF_4 (2), was obtained as a colorless powder. Compound 2 can also be obtained from compound 1 by evacuation. The crystal structure of CsBrF_4 (2) was elucidated by Rietveld refinement on its X-ray powder pattern. Its structure is not isotypic to MBrF_4 (M = Na, K, Rb, NO) but isotypic to CsAuF_4. CsBr_2F_7 is, however, not isostructural to CsAu_2F_7. (Copyright copyright 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co.
