[en] The low-lying energy levels up to 814 keV in 157Gd were Coulomb excited with 3.4 - 4.4 MeV protons. The branching ratios and the reduced quadrupole transition probabilities B(E2) of energy levels at 434, 517, 702, 748, and 814 keV have been measured for the first time using direct Coulomb excitation technique

AbstractAbstract
[en] The degree of depression in the neutron field caused by neutron absorption in the materials of an imaging plate (IP) was investigated using MCNP-4C. Consequently, the IP doped with Gd, which reproduced the distribution of 157Gd(n,γ)158Gd reaction rate in the previous study, depresses the relative distribution by about 50%. The depression for the IP in which Gd is replaced with similar amount of B atoms was estimated to be about 10%. The signal intensity for this IP is estimated to be at a similar level with that for Gd-doped IP.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Gadolinium-157 (157Gd) has the largest thermal neutron capture cross section among any stable nuclei. The thermal neutron capture yields γ-ray cascade with total energy of about 8 MeV. Because of these characteristics, Gd is applied for the recent neutrino detectors. Here, we propose an experiment to measure the multiplicity and the angular correlation of γ-rays from the Gd neutron capture. With these information, we expect the improved identification of the Gd neutron capture.

AbstractAbstract
[en] An energy level survey of atomic gadolinium was performed in the 31000- 37000 cm-1 region using simultaneous detection of optogalvanic and resonance photoionization signals; over 90 odd states, including 38 new ones, were revealed. The J-values of several new states were also determined by a method based on the J momentum selection rule. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The energy levels in 157Gd have been investigated using the (n,γ) and (n,n'γ) reactions. Rich information about these levels has been deduced. In particular, as a result of analysis of γ-ray spectra for 16 isolated neutron resonances, a level scheme with a complete set of levels with spin J=1/2 and J=3/2 has been established up to 1.86 MeV excitation energy. A part of the level scheme is interpreted on the basis of Coriolis and ΔN=2 coupled Nilsson configurations. Slightly different sets of shape parameters are observed for negative- and positive-parity levels. A large excess of unassigned J=1/2 and J=3/2 levels evidently requires their explanation in terms of inclusion of new additional degrees of freedom. (author)
