AbstractAbstract
[en] Splenogonadal fusion is a rare congenital anomaly characaterized as the fusion of the spleen and a gonad. The first report of this anomaly was in 1883 and only 160 cases have been reported to date. As far as we know, this is the first reported case of splenogonadal fusion in this country.

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper the authors present their findings on the isolation and characterisation, including sequence, of two forms of inhibin from bovine follicular fluid (bFF) and the subsequent development of a radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure which is applicable to follicular fluid and serum. (Auth.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The point on chorionic gonadotropin assays: which tests prescribe for the best take care? hCG assays are very often prescribed for biological investigations or before medical investigations. Physicians and biologists have to discuss about these different available hCG assays for an optimal patient's follow-up. Patients must be advised to have blood sample in the same laboratory to avoid analytical variations, possibly prejudicial in case of kinetic observations. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The aim of our study was to compare the image quality of T2-weighted gradient-echo-and-spin-echo (GRASE) MRI and fast spin-echo (FSE) MRI for imaging of cervical carcinoma. In 40 patients FSE8 (TR/TE = 3400/90 ms) MRI with echo train length (ETL) of 8, GRASE (3400/90) MRI with ETL of 18, turbo factor of 6 and 3 gradient reversals, and FSE18 (2500/120) MRI with ETL of 18 were performed. Tissue contrast, subjectively rated image quality, and accuracy of tumor delineation were compared. Surgical correlation was obtained in 27 subjects. Contrast-to-noise ratios of the tumor-cervix stroma, tumor-parametrium and tumor-rectum wall interfaces were better in FSE18 than in FSE8 and GRASE (P < 0.001) but not different between FSE8 and GRASE. Subjective image quality was better in FSE18 and FSE8 than in GRASE (P < 0.02). The accuracy of tumor delineation was similar for the three different sequences. The accuracy of FSE and GRASE MRI for the delineation of cervical carcinoma is similar. Based on measurement of image quality and CNRs, however, high turbo factor FSE provides better image quality in MRI of cervical carcinoma.Whether the superior characteristics may result in better staging has to be explored in larger clinical trials. AbstractAbstract
[en] In cooperation with the 'VEB Transformatoren- und Roentgenwerk Hermann Matern', Dresden, an adjustable radiation protection device has been developed. This supplementary equipment for fluoroscopes ensures a sufficient protection of the gonads against undesirable X radiation, can be handled easily and does not annoy patients, esp. children

AbstractAbstract
[en] Purpose: To compare the outcome of patients with Stage II seminoma treated with prophylactic mediastinal irradiation, without any supradiaphragmatic irradiation, and with prophylactic left supraclavicular irradiation (PLSCI). Methods and Materials: Between 1960 and 1999, 73 men with Stage II seminoma received postorchiectomy radiotherapy. Before 1984, 36 received prophylactic mediastinal irradiation (Series I); between 1984 and 1992, 17 received no supradiaphragmatic irradiation (Series II); and after 1992, 20 received PLSCI (Series III). The outcomes in these series were compared. Results: The abdominal tumor sizes were as follows: Series I, ≤2 cm, n=4; >2 and ≤5 cm, n=12; >5 and ≤10 cm, n=16; Series II, ≤2 cm, n=1; >2 and ≤5 cm, n=12; >5 and ≤10 cm, n=4; and Series III, ≤2 cm, n=1; >2 and ≤5 cm, n=14; >5 and ≤10 cm, n=5 (p 0.75). The median duration of follow-up was 14.4, 9.3, and 4.5 years for Series I, II, and III, respectively. The 6-year freedom from relapse was 94%, 71%, and 95% for Series I, II, and III, respectively. The differences between Series I and II (p=0.014) and between II and III (p = 0.042) were significant. Three patients in Series II had a relapse in their left supraclavicular fossa - a failure pattern abrogated by PLSCI. Conclusions: PLSCI significantly diminishes the likelihood of relapse for Stage IIA, IIB, and IIC seminoma (mass ≤10 cm)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The patient dose delivered by six C.T. scanners operated in both head and body modes has been assessed. Surface and internal doses have been measured as well as scattered dose to the gonads. Estimates of the integral dose to the patient have been made on these data. Differences in delivered dose of up to a factor of eight are found between different models
