AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper outlines a misuse of the electrostatic induction concept. A non-symmetrical behaviour was observed in a charge by the induction of an insulated hollow metallic conductor (the Faraday ice pail experiment). The major consequence of this experiment is a quick demonstration that the Earth must have a net negative charge. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] We study the dynamics of a one dimensional quantum spin chain evolving from unentangled or entangled initial state. At a given instant of time a quantum dynamical process (ex. quantum measurement operation) is performed on a single spin at one end of the chain, decohering the system. Through the further unitary evolution, a signal propagates in the spin chain, which can be detected from a measurement on a different spin at later times. From the dynamical unitary evolution of the decohered state from the epoch time, it is possible to detect the occurrence of the quantum operation. The propagation of the signal for the dynamical process, and the speed of the signal are investigated for various spin models, viz. using the Ising, Heisenberg and transverse- XY dynamics. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Thirty-eight spherules from the Antarctic ice sheet were analyzed using neutron activation analysis under two different conditions to investigate their origin. In almost all of these spherules, the contents of iron, cobalt, and manganese were determined to be 31% to 88%, 17 mg/kg to 810 mg/kg, and 0.017% to 7%, respectively. A detectable iridium content of 0.84 mg/kg was found in only one spherule, which was judged to be extraterrestrial in origin. A comparison of elemental compositions of the Antarctic spherules analyzed in this study with those of deep-sea sediment spherules and those of terrestrial materials revealed that most of the Antarctic spherules except for the sample in which iridium was detected could not be identified as extraterrestrial in origin

[en] The near-surface structure of thin vapor-deposited water ice films during formation and sublimation in vacuum has been probed using in-situ positron annihilation spectroscopy. While amorphous solid water films prepared at 120K are highly dense with low porosity micro- and interconnected meso-pores have been observed in the top few tens of nm of ice films prepared at temperature of 170 – 180K as the films are forming and during sublimation. Responses to these near-surface pores are much more pronounced in films grown at 170 – 180K than in those grown at lower temperatures.

[en] Highlights: • Dynamic flexion-extension HASTE is a rapid addition to standard MRI cervical spine protocols. • The sequence may useful for assessment of dynamic spondylolisthesis and dynamic cord deformity. • HASTE appears reproducible between readers and demonstrates agreement with flex-ex radiographs. : To assess the utility of a 2D dynamic HASTE sequence in assessment of cervical spine flexion-extension, specifically (1) comparing dynamic spondylolisthesis to radiographs and (2) assessing dynamic contact upon or deformity of the cord.

AbstractAbstract
[en] Since summer 2021, the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is searching for astrophysical neutrinos at energies >10 PeV by detecting the radio emission from particle showers in the ice around Summit Station, Greenland. We present an extensive simulation study that shows how RNO-G will be able to measure the energy of such particle cascades, which will in turn be used to estimate the energy of the incoming neutrino that caused them. The location of the neutrino interaction is determined using the differences in arrival times between channels and the electric field of the radio signal is reconstructed using a novel approach based on Information Field Theory. Based on these properties, the shower energy can be estimated. We show that this method can achieve an uncertainty of 13% on the logarithm of the shower energy after modest quality cuts and estimate how this can constrain the energy of the neutrino. The method presented in this paper is applicable to all similar radio neutrino detectors, such as the proposed radio array of IceCube-Gen2.

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this work, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of ice nucleation on a rigid surface model of cubic zinc blende structure with different surface dipole strength and orientation. Our results show that, although substrates are excellently lattice-matched to cubic ice, ice nucleation merely occurred as the interfacial water molecules (IWs) show identical or similar orientations to that of water molecules in cubic ice. Free energy landscapes revealed that, as substrates have non-suitable dipole strength/orientation, there exist large free energy barriers for rotating dipole IWs to the right orientation to trigger ice formation. This study stresses that, beyond the traditional view of lattice match and the similarity of lattice length between the substrate and new-formed crystal, the similarity between molecular orientations of interfacial component and component in the specific new-formed crystalline face is also critical for promoting ice nucleation.
