AbstractAbstract
[en] A microwave generated electrodeless lamp using a single magnetron, and an improved lamp envelope therefor. An elongated lamp envelope containing a plasma forming medium is disposed in a microwave chamber comprised of a reflector and mesh. The reflector includes a pair of coupling slots, each of which is disposed equidistant from the ends of the lamp envelope. A waveguide means is provided which has a wall which is comprised of a portion of the reflector which includes the slots, and has means for introducing microwave energy thereto at an area equidistant from the two slots so that the energy couples equally to the slots. When the frequency of the microwave energy and chamber dimensions are arranged so that a symmetrical standing wave exists in the chamber, a balanced system results wherein after a short start-up period, approximately equal light output is obtained from the respective ends of the lamp envelop. In order to prevent recondensation of the envelope fill during operation at areas of low temperature, and improved envelope is provided in which such areas are severly tapered to cause hotter operation thereat

AbstractAbstract
[en] Calculations of microwave radiation power dependence upon magnetron parameters with a real voltage pulse shape being considered showed fairly good agreement with similar dependencies obtained experimentally. This allowed to choose magnetron optimal parameters in agreement with a high current accelerator as a power source. Next way to increase radiated power is to sum up powers of some pulse relativistic magnetrons. A scheme is based on the principle of nonsymmetry allowing a rather strong mismatch of magnetrons eigenfrequencies and being not so critical to a choice of connection line length. The strong coupling provides fast phase locking and high efficiency of the pulse powers addition

AbstractAbstract
[en] A modification of the currently operating Calutron, magnetron, and modified duoPIGatron negative ion source is proposed; the modification should improve gas efficiency by more than an order of magnitude in the Calutron, a factor of 5 in the magnetron, and a factor of 2 in the duoPIGatron. AbstractAbstract
[en] We report a new high vacuum instrument which is dedicated to the preparation of well-defined clusters supported on model and technologically relevant supports for catalytic and materials investigations. The instrument is based on deposition of size selected metallic cluster ions that are produced by a high flux magnetron cluster source. The throughput of the apparatus is maximized by collecting and focusing ions utilizing a conical octupole ion guide and a linear ion guide. The size selection is achieved by a quadrupole mass filter. The new design of the sample holder provides for the preparation of multiple samples on supports of various sizes and shapes in one session. After cluster deposition onto the support of interest, samples will be taken out of the chamber for a variety of testing and characterization

AbstractAbstract
[en] The vapor cloud produced by a magnetron sputtering gun in the vacuum chamber is not uniform. In order to coat substrates within a desired tolerance of thickness uniformity, a 'flattening' of the vapor flux distribution is required. This is achieved by means of mechanical masks which intercept the vapor cloud, by a carefully designed motion of the substrate through the vapor cloud, or by a combination of both. The present work describes a design method for masks, to be used with planar substrates, and its application in the case of a Varian S-GUN magnetron sputtering gun. By using the mask the coating thickness uniformity on large ring shaped flat substrates, 200 mm wide, has been improved from ±35% to ±9% around the mean value of the thickness. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The injection locking of a magnetron is theoretically analyzed when either the free running oscillator or the drive signal has a frequency chirp. It is found that complete phase locking of the signal cannot be achieved in either case. However, as long as the locking condition of Adler is well-satisfied instantaneously, a high degree of locking occurs during a major duration of the frequency chirps. The expected output phase variation is computed in terms of the noise in the free-running magnetron oscillator for the case of constant drive frequency.
