AbstractAbstract
[en] This process is designed to avoid the tedious shutting down and starting up of an HTR with its high heat stresses if faults require shutting off but not reduction to the cold subcritical condition. In such cases a period of shutdown with removal of criticality but maintaining relatively high temperature is sufficient. For this purpose, the reactivity is reduced by only 0.5%, by suitably driving in the absorber rods. Then the reactor is kept in the subcritical condition by circulation of coolant at operating temperature. With the negative reactivity - temperature coefficient there is an inherently safe shutdown condition. (HP)

(HP)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] In a guide tube of the liquid metal-cooled (Na) reactor a number of absorber rods containing B C is arranged. If the coolant flow rate becomes too low the rods are dropped into the reactor core. For this purpose a chamber with a bellows wall serves as safety and tripping element. The chamber is mechanically connected with the absorber rods. The gas contained in the chamber keeps the bellows and with it the absorber rods in a fixed position until the coolant pressure is decreasing. Then the bellows will move the absorber rods in the direction of the reactor core. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] An attempt is made to construct sufficient conditions for xenon and temperature-controlled nuclear reactors to be stable against power excursions or inadvertent shutdowns. Region of asymptotic stability in the large in the plane of equilibrium flux versus temperature coefficient is determined. Two different criteria for the region asymptotic stability are compared. AbstractAbstract
[en] Large releases of activated corrosion products from the fuel surfaces (or other core internals) during shutdowns may lead to increased out-of-core radiation levels. Controlled shutdown methods to minimize boiling and maximize cleanup have been tried to reduce the impact of released activated corrosion products on radiation levels. A survey of BWR reactors was made and the data reviewed to determine possible benefits of controlling the plant shutdown process. Both routine and controlled shutdown data was made available for about one-third of the BWR's in the United States
