AbstractAbstract
[en] ScFe2 crystallizes in the hexagonal C-14 Laves phase. Magnetic measurements performed in the temperature range 4 to 6000K reveal that the sample orders ferromagnetically with a Curie temperature of 5450K. Saturation magnetization measurements performed at 4.20K yield a value of 2.9 μ/sub B/ per formula unit of ScFe2. The easy axis of magnetization was determined by examining the changes in the intensities of x-ray pattern on aligning a powder at room temperature in a field of 20 kOe. This was found to be along the c-axis. Moessbauer pattern at room temperature exhibits a magnetic hyperfine interaction with a complex spectrum

AbstractAbstract
[en] Encouraged by the promising application of the Al-Cu-Sc system in the development of high strength aluminum alloy, the Al-rich region of this system was assessed by the CALPHAD approach. In order to make the models used for the phases in the three binary sub-systems compatible with each other, Al-Sc and Cu-Sc system were remodeled. Substitutional solution model was used for solution phases and sublattice model for binary intermetallic phases and the ternary compound Al8-xCu4+xSc. Comparisons between the calculated and experimental results showed that most of the experimental information was satisfactorily described by the present thermodynamic description.

AbstractAbstract
[en] A composition between the state diagrams of R-M-Si systems is carried out, where R-Y, Ce, Ti, Zr, Hf, Sc; M-Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu. Specifications of their structure, compositions and crystal structures of compounds, formed in them, are analyzed. It is shown that Sc is an analog of Zr and Hf according to the character of physicochemical interaction with Si and transition metals. Established regularities of component interaction can be used for purposeful study of other systems

AbstractAbstract
[en] Systems formed by rare-earth metals and Ge, Sn, Pb are considered. It is shown that temperatures of some phase equilibria in them linearly depend on melting temperatures of pure rare-earth metals. A statistical processing of data from literature on temperatures of nonvariant equilibria is carried out. The equation permits determining equilibria temperatures in systems not investigated previously. The results of studies have shown validity of the lsuggested model for prediciton of temperatures of certain nonvariant equilibria in systems with REM

AbstractAbstract
[en] Australia possesses a significant percentage of the world reserves of the ores required for the production of light alloys such as aluminium, magnesium and titanium. However, most of these minerals deposits are exported for processing, losing the potential of value adding benefits. Scandium has been known for some time to possess excellent grain refining properties when alloyed with aluminium. Although this adds considerable benefits to the mechanical properties of these alloys, it has not been fully exploited due to the high cost of producing the scandium metal. Deposits of scandium containing ore have recently been identified in Australia that are far more accessible than other deposits throughout the world. CSIRO Manufacturing Science and Technology had initiated a research project to investigate the effect of scandium and other grain refining additions on the properties of selected aluminium alloys in order to develop the market and maximise the potential benefits from Australian resources. The major objective of the project is to develop high strength aluminum alloys that exhibit good processing characteristics, particularly good weldability

AbstractAbstract
[en] Energies of scandium interchange with elements of the periodic system were calculated on the basis of Hilderbrand-Mott relation. Correlation with the type of state diagrams testifies to the dependences of these values on serial numbers of elements in the periodic system. Determination of interchange energy in iron-sandium system by three independent methods provides close values, indicating moderate negative deviations from the ideal, which decrease insufficiently with temperature growth
