AbstractAbstract
[en] The IPP/DOE program office has finished its evaluation of the alpha-emitting isotope work with Kurchatov Institute and IPPE, and they have made an important decision about the future of this work. IPP/DOE has directed us to re-program the work and add more funds, so the emphasis will be on production of Th228. By making this re-direction of the isotope work, IPPE will see several important benefits: (a) the payments will be made faster to IPPE by using the ISTC Agreement; (b) a larger amount of money will be paid to IPPE; and (c) a profitable future business opportunity for IPPE is more probable.

AbstractAbstract
[en] A simple method was devised to separate 224Ra from a source of 228Th. The procedure involves coprecipitation of 228Th and Zirconium as the hypophosphate in HCl. 224Ra was soluble in the acidic medium and was separated from 228Th by 3 successive centrifugations at 40,000 xg. Initial yield was approximately 40 percent and the separation factor was 105 or better

AbstractAbstract
[en] Measurements performed by the Institute during 2000 - 2013 are summarized. Focus was on 40K, 226Ra and 228Th. Basic principles of the method of determination are explained, and an overview of the geologic sites from which building materials were extracted is presented. The results were related to the geologic structure type. Of the radionuclides examined, 40K was found to contribute to the specific activity index I most. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] In all recommended procedures for thorium isotope determination by alpha spectrometry, corrections for chemical recoveries are made by the introduction of a tracer such as 234Th, 227Th or 229Th. Each has limitations that are enhanced by the presence of chemical interferences such as rare earth elements. This paper describes a successful technique of indirect measurement of thorium isotopes by the determination of 224Ra using 133Ba as a tracer. Consideration is given to the factors that influence accuracy and precision of the method. Data pertaining to its application for the analysis of uranium mine tailing and the associated environment is presented. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] A large potential exists for the use of short lived alpha emitting isotopes for therapeutic purposes. Most prior research has been performed with isotopes such as 211At which require a cyclotron for production. It obviously would be more convenient to use a long lived isotopic generator system. For this reason, we have undertaken a study of the properties of several such generators, one of which, 228Th, is described here
