[en] The synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of two new multinuclear thorium complexes are reported. The tetranuclear μ_4-oxo cluster complex Th_4(μ_4-O)(μ-Cl)_2I_6[κ"2(O,O"')-μ-O(CH_2)_2OCH_3]_6 and the dinuclear complex Th_2I_5[κ"2(O,O"')-μ-O(CH_2)_2OCH_3]_3(DME) (DME=dimethoxyethane) are formed by C-O bond activation of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) mediated by thorium iodide complexes. [en] In this work we present a facile, lab scale synthesis for thorium tetrahalides ThX4 (X = Cl, Br, and I). The reaction between the easily available ThO2 and AlX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) and a subsequent in situ chemical vapor transport (CVT) leads to a product of high purity, which is obtained in the form of crystals or large aggregates of crystals. Their identity and purity was evidenced by X-ray powder diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The usage of ThO2 avoids, unlike earlier syntheses, the utilization of scarcely available thorium metal or of other reactants, such as CCl4, which leads to impurities. Furthermore, the reaction tolerates even less pure ThO2. (copyright 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH and Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

[en] Determination of Sc and Th in ScI3-NaI-ThI4 sample is studied by X-ray fluorescence and complexometry. The effect of working condition of Sc on X-ray fluorescence spectrometer and different sample-making method on the determination of Sc and Th are studied experimentally. The X-ray fluorescence analysis of determination of Sc and Th is developed by polyester film sample-making technique, the measuring precision of Sc and Th is better than 4%. The effect of acidity and temperature on the determining end point of titration is obvious. The results of different complexometric methods are compared. The precision of Sc and Th is less than 2% by comlexometry, it is fit for the routine analysis of ScI3-NaI-ThI4 sample

[en] Iodine-129 Moessbauer spectra of four actinide iodides, ThI4, UI4, NpI3, and PuI3 have been studied. The 129I Moessbauer spectra of the iodides all showed a single asymmetric resonance with inflections in the envelope. The inflections and asymmetry of the envelope were interpreted to indicate that the normal 129I quadrupole splitting was too small to be resolved. No significant differences were noted for the Moessbauer parameters among the four iodides. However, unexpected differences were noted in the isomer shifts and quadrupole coupling constants for lanthanide iodides and actinide iodides. 16 references, 2 figures, 2 tables
