AbstractAbstract
[en] When Vandellos-2 was officially declared in operation (March 3, 1988), the third generation of nuclear power plants became a reality in Spain. Located in Tarragona province on the Mediterranian coast, Vandellos-2 has demonstrated the value of developing working partnership among all participants in building a country's nuclear program. Vandellos-2 was planned and built by the Asociacion Nuclear Vandellos (ANV), comprising the utilities ENDESA (72 %) and Hidroelectrica Espanola (28 %). The unit has a 2785 MWth three-loop Westinghouse PWR feeding a Westinghouse turbine-generator with a gross power of 982 MWe. To obtain a competitive nuclear cost per kWh for the completed plant, ANV has carefully controlled all aspects of the project as well as monitoring hardware and construction costs. ANV's success in keeping the project on schedule was aided by Spanish industry's 25 years of experience in nuclear construction. 2 tabs

AbstractAbstract
[en] Spain is witnessing the phase-out of a nuclear power plant. It is a unique experience in our country and therefore the dismantling work has been watched closely, not only from here but also from abroad. The Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos (ENRESA) is in charge of managring the dismantling and decommissioning work of the Vandellos-1 nuclear power plant, located in the municipally of l' Hospitalet de l'Infant (Tarragona). The work began five years ago and has been executed on schedule. The appearance of what was one of the first Spanish commercial nuclear power plants has been changed radically to leave premises suitable for any other activity. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Spanish Public Company for Nuclear Wastes Management (ENRESA) has elaborated a plan for the dismantling and decommissioning of the Nuclear Power Plant Vandellos-I, that suffered a critical accident in October 1989. Once the Spanish Government approved the plant dismantling according to the second level of the IAEA, ENRESA signed a protocol of agreement with the Company Electricity de France (EDF). This agreement means an interchange of experiences on plant dismantling. At the present time Vandellos I is working under mode 5; namely, reactor closed-down and fuel elements being removed, and refrigerated with air at atmospheric-pressure and residual power of less than 400 KW (Thermal)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Status and prospects of nuclear power development in Spain in the nearest future are considered. Spain is noted to be at the stage of designing the third generation of NPPs. It includes five designs: Vandellos-2 (PWR reactor of 982 MW (e) and 2785 MW (t) of Westinghouse Electric Corp), Trillo-1 (PWR reactor of 1041 MW (e) power), Valdekaballeros-1 and -2 (BWR reactors of 975 MW (e)) and Trillo-2 (PWR-KWU reactor of 1041 MW). Specifications of the Vandellos-2 NPP are presented. Licence for construction is obtained in December, 1980. Commissioning is scheduled for December. 1987
