AbstractAbstract
[en] The mass of coal entering the boiler per unit time is an essential parameter for determinig the total rate of heat input. The mass flow rate of coal on a conveyor belt is generally determined as a product of the instantaneous mass of material on a short section of the belt and the belt velocity. Belt loading could be measured by conventional transducers incorporating mechanical or electromechanical weighers or by gamma-ray attenuation gauge. This report reviews the state of the art in mass flow devices for coal handling. The various methods are compared and commented upon. Special design issues are discussed relative to incorporating a mass flow measuring device in a Continuous On-Line Nuclear Analysis of Coal (CONAC) system

AbstractAbstract
[en] An individual nuclear fuel rod weighing system for rods carried on a tray which moves along a materials handling conveyor is discussed. At a first tray position on the conveyor, a lifting device raises the rods off the tray and places them on an overhead ramp. A loading mechanism conveys the rods singly from the overhead ramp onto an overhead scale for individual weighing. When the tray is at a second position on the conveyor, a transfer apparatus transports each weighed rod from the scale back onto the tray

AbstractAbstract
[en] The principle is described of gamma collimation equipment for radiometric weighing of materials on conveyor belts or similar transport devices. The equipment consists of a gamma radiation source, shielding and a detector connected to a pulse amplifier, discriminator and possibly integrator. The radiation source is mounted on a moving endless belt whose axis is normal to the direction of material flow. A multislot collimator is placed between the endless belt and the conveyor. (B.S.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Principles of operation of different types of continuous conveyor belt weighing machines developed for use in factories for bulk weighing of material on conveyor belts without interupting the material flow, are briefly mentioned. The design of nuclear weighing scale making use of the radiation absorption property of the material used is described in detail. The radiation source, choice of the source, detector and geometry of such a weighing scale are discussed. The nucleonic belt weigher is compared with the gravimetric belt weigher system. The advantages of the nuclear system are pointed out. The assembly drawing of the electronics, calibration procedure and performance evaluation are given. (A.K.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Fluidized powder is discharged from a fluidizing vessel into a container. Accurate metering is achieved by opening and closing the valve to discharge the powder in a series of short-duration periods until a predetermined weight is measured by a load cell. The duration of the discharge period may be increased in inverse proportion to the amount of powder in the vessel. Preferably the container is weighed between the discharge periods to prevent fluctuations resulting from dynamic effects. The gas discharged into the container causes the pressures in the vessel and container to equalize thereby decreasing the rate of discharge and increasing the accuracy of metering as the weight reaches the predetermined value. AbstractAbstract
[en] To enhance the efficiency of nuclear materials control and accounting a complex of weight sensors and a complex of 'smart shelves' were put into operation at one of the facilities of the RSC 'Kurchatovskiy Institute'. The weight sensors and 'smart shelves' equipment designed in ORNL provide for a continuous, remote measuring of weight of the controlled items and their constant inventory valuation. After inspection, testing, adjustment and finishing of the used software the both complexes were built up at one of the nuclear material depositories. The complexes control more than 20 kg of uranium-containing nuclear material with enrichment of 90% by U-235, in form of small non-identified components placed in specific casks. Application of the weight sensor complex, combined with the complex of 'smart shelves', provides for on-line detection of the clandestine, long-term removal of nuclear material in small portions
