AbstractAbstract
[en] Different types of wide-gap spark chambers developed for nuclear-physical studies of cosmic rays are described. They are characterized by small disruptive voltage, minimum requirement for gas purity, at conservation of both measuring abilities and effectiveness of many particle registration when area of spark chambers is some square meters. Technological and physical parameters of spark chambers, methods of photographing and elimination of high voltage pulse noise on the sensitive electric instruments are given

AbstractAbstract
[en] Two designs are described of a wide-gap spark chamber with side walls of Milar film. During the assembly of the chamber, special attention is given to the tautness of the Milar film. To increase the mechanical strength of the spark chambers, dielectric columns are set up between the electrodes at the chamber corners so as not to interfere with photography. Spark chambers with Milar walls are strong, light in weight, and easy to handle

AbstractAbstract
[en] The application of two high-voltage pulse generators (HVPG) for supplying wide-gap spark chambers is discussed. The use of the pulse supply of the second ''recording'' HVPG increases the chamber operation reliability. Experimentally obtained distributions of output pulse amplitudes and time delays during the ''recording'' HVPG operation are given

AbstractAbstract
[en] A new cosmic-ray muon spectrometer using a solid iron magnet has been constructed at Nagoya. The spectrometer detects muon tracks optically by wide gap spark chambers, mean detection efficiency of which is 95+-2%. The spark chambers are triggered by a time-of-flight counter system and the time resolution of this system is 11+-0.5 nsec F. W.H.M. Through an optical system of 10 mirrors and 2 cameras, the muon trajectories in spark chambers are photographed stereoscopically. To measure the coordinates of the spark images on the photographic films, an automatic scanning equipment using a solid-state image sensor has been developed. Aperture angle of this spectrometer is 57.1 cm2 sterad for the muon with infinite momentum. The maximum detectable momentum is estimated over 10 TeV/c by the Monte Carlo calculation including the effect due to the detection efficiency of spark chambers

AbstractAbstract
[en] A technique of optical wedges allowing the full reconstruction of pictures of events in space is considered. The technique is used for the detection of particle tracks in optical wide-gap spark chambers by photographing in one projection. The optical wedges are refracting right-angle plastic prisms positioned between the camera and the spark chamber so that through them both ends of the track are photographed. A method for calibrating measurements is given, and an estimate made of the accuracy of the determination of the second projection with the help of the optical wedges

AbstractAbstract
[en] The characteristics of a wide-gap spark chamber with polyethylene absorbers are presented. The dependences of the efficiency with which the particles are recorded by the chamber on the amplitude and on the time delay of the high-voltage pulse are measured. The accuracy with which the sparks are traced along the particle track and the dimensions of the sparks are determined when the chamber is filled with Ne

AbstractAbstract
[en] An analysis is given of experimental data on electric discharge along particle trajectories in a wide gap spark chamber obtained with the help of the photomultiplier. The analysis is held under the definite method of application of the account (record-keeping) of a pulse shape of an electrical field affixed to a discharge gap. Thus, the best agreement of the experimental data with the numerical solution is possible to achieve. (author)
