AbstractAbstract
[en] The ISIS target design has all the features required for a target of much higher powers. The importance of including instrumentation as a fundamental design requirement cannot be overstated. In operation the target temperatures have been very close to those calculated. Changes in the target geometry (from swelling or any other cause) have been measured using the gap constant with the thermocouples in each plate providing confirmation by registering higher temperatures as the gap closes. In addition the attention give to remote handling in the basic mechanical design was crucial to the successful operation of the system. (author)
