AbstractAbstract
[en] Using over 100 samples of roe deer venison taken largely from the Rural District of Marburg-Biedenkopf and adjoining areas, a biological half-life of 21.9±2.2 days was established for caesium in roe deer. Since the radioactive contamination of the environment after Chernobyl and, therefore, the intake of radioactivity by the animals lasted for only a very short period of time, no significant contamination levels are expected through the consumption of newly killed roe deer. After 120 days, the radioactivity of caesium in a live roe deer has subsided again to less than 1/40 of its initial value

AbstractAbstract
[en] In 1998, it became know that contaminations exceeding the regulatory limits were frequently observed on transports of spent fuel from Switzerland to reprocessing plants in France and in the United Kingdom. Transports of unloaded flasks were also affected. A number of measures were imposed by the Competent Authorties of the countries concerned. In Switzerland, technical, radiological and organizational measures were implemented. Between August 1999 and October 2002, 37 transports of spent fuel and three transports of vitrified high level waste were carried out within, from and to Switzerland. No contamination above the regulatory limits was observed, showing the effect of the measures taken and also the increased attention paid by the operators to the issue of contamination. (orig.)

(orig.)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] In a recent investigation of the spontaneous fission of 252Cf using a twin ionization chamber with Frisch grids and CH4 as counter gas, the mean values for the fission fragment parameters did not agree with literature values if no pulse height defect (PHD) was taken into account. To the contrary, it had been reported that CH4 shows negligible PHD

AbstractAbstract
[en] The use of a personal computer as a multichannel analyser and data evaluation unit is described. Alpha spectrometry is taken as an example to show that a personal computer can be used for complex multiparameter peak-fit calculations in a tolerable amount of time. Personal computers can possess enhanced display facilities, making them an ideal tool for interactive high precision analyses of spectra. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] X-ray and gamma-ray lines following the decay of 227Ac in transient equilibrium with its daughters were assayed via high-purity germanium-crystal (HPGe) spectrometry of a chemically purified 227Ac gamma-ray source. Relative emission probabilities were determined for 120 lines (Iγ≥ 0.003%), and conversion to absolute emission probabilities was achieved via normalization to the known intensity of the well-characterized 351-keV gamma-ray line of 211Bi, a daughter of 227Ac. Special emphasis was paid to the stronger lines, which can be used for energy and/or efficiency calibrations of germanium detectors. (Author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Gamma-ray lines following the decay of 234mPa were assayed via high-purity germanium-crystal (HPGe) spectrometry of analytical-grade foils of depleted uranium metal. Absolute intensities were determined for the strongest lines (Iγ ≥ 0.002%), with special emphasis on the 1001 keV line, which is often used for either assay or normalization purposes. The Iγ value derived for this latter line was independently confirmed in two further measurements, in which its intensity relative to the 185.7 keV gamma line which accompanies the decay of 235U was compared. Our new value for the absolute intensity of this line Iγ (1001 keV) is (0.845 ± 0.021)%, which is over 1.4 times greater than the currently-accepted value. (author)
