AbstractAbstract
[en] Reasons for the recent widespread interest in light nuclei are presented and some problems are discussed. States of a particular character, say 1+ states, or 4- states, can be preferentially excited, and observed, using hitherto unavailable probes and techniques, and nuclei far off the valley of stability, such as 8He and 8C can now be routinely created. Beams of electrons, pions, kaons, antiprotons and heavy ions at high energies are all available with high resolution. The second reason is that the increased interest in and sophistication of astrophysical calculations require the measurement of many cross sections involved in nucleosynthesis. Thirdly, populations of states in the light nuclei have been used as signatures for what happens when heavy nuclei collide at high energies. The fourth reason is that many of the states in the light nuclei are so well understood that they can be used to test fundamental processes in the laboratory. Lastly, the light nuclei, whose states are well separated at low excitation energies, can be used to test nuclear reaction models. (author)
