AbstractAbstract
[en] This analysis discusses the historical experience of operating Light Water Reactors with respect to achieved uranium utilization rates. The assumptions and method of approach are discussed. The data is presented in several ways. Historical specific energies have been determined for all operating cycles for each nuclear reactor having completed at least one cycle prior to April 1979. In addition, the data has been aggregated to illustrate the following: (1) performance histories of BWRs and PWRs, (2) reactors with a MWe rating above and below 800 MWe, (3) reactors which have operated for five cycles or more, and (4) chronological experience of annual discharges

AbstractAbstract
[en] There are currently two areas on the national scene and one on the international scene that require immediate attention. The first is relief under contracts for enrichment services, an area in which the US can still demonstrate its desire to become a stable and continuous source of supply. The second national area is the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Act of 1977. The United States must proceed very cautiously, however, for if discretion and very careful judgment are not used, the Act will immediately be branded as a blatant effort on the part of the US to control the energy options of other sovereign states. The international area is that of the International Nuclear Fuel Cycle Evaluation program. This medium exists for wise and deliberate growth of a commercial nuclear power program which can serve the global community. The next three years probably allow one remaining chance for successful containment of weapons proliferation. If we do not recognize the rights of every sovereign state to voluntarily participate and agree, we, as members of the global community, will have failed

AbstractAbstract
[en] Nuclear Assurance Corporation (NAC), in cooperation the with Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation (ESEERCO) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), has been developing the design of a BWR fuel consolidation system. The program contemplates developing an engineering design package sufficient to procure a prototype consolidation system, run a cold test of the system with dummy fuel, and finally perform a confirming hot test with irradiated fuel as a qualification of a commercially viable process. Fuel consolidation is, of course, not new, and has, in fact, been demonstrated by several nuclear service companies including NAC, with varying degrees of compaction (or consolidation) success ratios. This NAC/ESEERCO/EPRI program focused on demonstrating, via proof of principle testing, handling of the non fuel bearing components (NFBC) in a manner than achieves a consolidation or volume reduction which is the subject of this paper. Previous fuel consolidation programs have come up short, mostly in the area of the NFBC handling. The results of this program are believed to be a major step that should restore industry faith in his aspect of fuel consolidation
