AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper, the authors measure the characteristics of muon pairs (continuum and resonates), correlated with the electromagnetic transverse energy ET produced in the same event, in 200 GeV/nucleon oxygen-uranium and oxygen-copper collisions. The production of J/ψ is investigated and compared to the continuum in different intervals of ET. The authors observe a relative decrease of the Jψ production with increasing ET; this suppression is enhanced at low PT

AbstractAbstract
[en] In this paper the like-sign muon pairs copiously recorded in the high luminosity NA38 experiment are interpreted as resulting from decays of π and K mesons. It is shown that the muon properties reflect the pion and kaon ones. The average transverse momentum is found to be similar for p - U, O16 - U and S32 - U reactions. The K/π ratio, which indicates strangeness production, is also the same for the three reactions. Both measurements increase slightly with ET

AbstractAbstract
[en] The dimuon production in 200 GeV/nucleon oxygen-uranium interactions is studied by the NA38 Collaboration. The production of J/Ψ, correlated with the transverse energy ET, is investigated and compared to the continuum, as a function of the dimuon mass M and transverse momentum PT. A value of 0.64±0.06 is found for the ratio (Ψ/continuum at high ET)/(Ψ/continuum at low ET), from which the J/Ψ relative suppression can be extracted. This suppression is enhanced at low PT. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The like-sign dimuons copiously recorded in the NA38 experiment both in p-U and O-U reactions at 200 GeV/nucleon are interpreted as resulting from decays of π and K mesons in comparable proportions. The ++/-- ratio is large (≅ 1.7) and ascribed to the K+ being more copiously produced than the K-. Both the average transverse momentum and the ++/-- ratio are comparable for p-U and O-U reactions, and both increase only slightly with the transverse energy ET. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Muon pairs production together with the correlated transverse energy have been measured with 200 Gev/N incident particles (p, O16, S32) bombarding Uranium or Copper targets. With increasing transverse energy a strong J/ψ suppression, relatively to the continuum, has been observed with incident ions. Also, this effect is enhanced at low transverse momentum. These results have been predicted to occur in case of quarks and gluons plasma formation

AbstractAbstract
[en] The dimuon production in 200 GeV/nucleon O-U, O-Cu, S-U and p-U reactions is studied in function of transverse energy ET produced by the collision. The J/Ψ production relative to continuum events is suppressed for heavy ion induced reactions when ET increases. This suppression is enhanced at low transverse momentum. The π and K meson distributions extracted from the data, have, for each reaction, a similar average transverse momentum which increases only slightly with the transverse energy. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The study of oxygen-uranium reactions at 200 GeV/nucleon shows a significant transverse energy dependence of the yield of J/Ψ's relative to muon pairs produced in the mass continuum. This feature, observed for the first time, is in agreement with predictions from quark-gluon plasma formation, although alternative explanations by hadronic effects cannot be ruled out at this stage.
