AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper is an objective assessment of morphologic and functional pulmonary status by histogram analysis of the distribution of cumulated frequencies of CT attenuation values (CCTAs). Twenty-seven patients with fibrosing alveolitis, 27 patients with granulomatous interstitial lung disease (ILD), 3 patients with severs emphysema, and 6 healthy controls were studied with high-resolution CT. Three 1-mm CT sections of the lung were obtained at 50% of actual vital capacity determined and controlled spirometrically. The CCTAs were analyzed quantitatively and correlated with lung function data. Correlations (p < .001) were found between CCTAs of -975 to -800 HU with vital and diffusing capacity and with exercise PaO2

AbstractAbstract
[en] Jet cross sections in deep inelastic e p scattering (DIS) and photoproduction were measured with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA using data collected in the years 1999-2007 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 500 pb-1. Measurements of differential cross sections for inclusive-jet production in DIS and photoproduction are presented together with the tri-jet to di-jet ratio in DIS. Inclusive jet, di-jet and tri-jet cross sections, normalised to the neutral current DIS cross sections, are also measured and presented as functions of Q2, jet transverse momentum and proton momentum fraction. All the measurements are well described by perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order corrected for hadronization effects. QCD analyses of the measured observables were used to extract precise values of the strong coupling constant and test its energy-scale dependence. (authors)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Test beam measurements at the test beam facilities of DESY have been conducted to characterise the performance of the EUDET-type beam telescopes originally developed within the EUDET project. The beam telescopes are equipped with six sensor planes using MIMOSA26 monolithic active pixel devices. A programmable Trigger Logic Unit provides trigger logic and time stamp information on particle passage. Both data acquisition framework and offline reconstruction software packages are available. User devices are easily integrable into the data acquisition framework via predefined interfaces. The biased residual distribution is studied as a function of the beam energy, plane spacing and sensor threshold. Its standard deviation at the two centre pixel planes using all six planes for tracking in a 6 GeV electron/positron-beam is measured to be (2.88±0.08) μm. Iterative track fits using the formalism of General Broken Lines are performed to estimate the intrinsic resolution of the individual pixel planes. The mean intrinsic resolution over the six sensors used is found to be (3.24±0.09) μm. With a 5 GeV electron/positron beam, the track resolution halfway between the two inner pixel planes using an equidistant plane spacing of 20 mm is estimated to (1.83±0.03) μm assuming the measured intrinsic resolution. Towards lower beam energies the track resolution deteriorates due to increasing multiple scattering. Threshold studies show an optimal working point of the MIMOSA26 sensors at a sensor threshold of between five and six times their RMS noise. Measurements at different plane spacings are used to calibrate the amount of multiple scattering in the material traversed and allow for corrections to the predicted angular scattering for electron beams.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The behavior of the ground-state hyperfine coherence formed in coherent population trapping (CPT) is studied. Using potassium atoms cooled with a magneto-optical trap, a pure hyperfine CPT state was prepared in a magnetic field, and hyperfine coherent effects in an open system were experimentally studied with off-Raman resonance oscillations (ORRO). Comparisons were made to full numerical simulations and to a pseudo-three-level model. The frequency and phase of ORRO can be manipulated by changing the relative frequency and phase of the lasers

AbstractAbstract
[en] 104 patients submitted to primary irradiation for cervix carcinoma were examined by means of urodynamic methods of diagnosis in order to investigate the functional changes of the lower urinary tract induced by therapy. 34 patients could be examined prior the therapy, 19 and 12 patients, respectively, were examined six and 18 months on an average after the treatment. Another group of 70 patients had retrospective check-up examinations with average intervals of five and ten years. Hydronephroses occured only as a late result after more than six years in 12% of the irradiated women. The incidence of residual urine, significant bacteriuria, and disturbed sensory function of the bladder was not important. All patients were incontinent two years after the irradiation; 60% of these cases of incontinence were due to the bladder and 40% to the urethra. The increase of urge incontinences is possibly caused by a radiofibrotic reaction of the bladder, as is shown by correspondent cystonometric alterations: The bladder tonicity increased, whereas the bladder capacity decreased. These alterations were only partially reversible. The stress incontinence, however, was found already before the treatment. The maximum urethral closing pressure, which often indicates incontinences due to the urethra, was not modified by the irradiation. An increased stress incontinence, probably caused by advanced age, was found only after six years or later. The problems resulting from functional changes should be taken into consideration in the course of posttherapeutic care, i.e. the patients concerned should be given instructions for a regular bladder training. AbstractAbstract
[en] We review the use of laser cooling and trapping techniques for nuclear beta-decay angular correlations. Coincidences between the beta (β) and recoiling nucleus allow the determination of the neutrino (ν) momentum more directly than previously possible. Highly spin-polarized samples are also possible, with polarization known from atomic observables, and the nuclear recoils both in singles and in coincidence with the β add interesting observables. Ongoing experiments are trapping elements that provide pure Fermi, pure Gamow–Teller, and mixed Gamow–Teller transitions to distinguish sources of new physics. To compete with the next generation of neutron β-decay experiments, cases are being carefully chosen to minimize or at least know recoil-order corrections. (paper)

AbstractAbstract
[en] This paper describes the first measurement of spin observables in nuclear muon capture by 3He. The sensitivity of spin observables to the pseudoscalar coupling is described. The triton asymmetry presented has to be corrected for small systematic effects in order to extract the vector analyzing power. The analysis of these effects is currently underway
