AbstractAbstract
[en] The HypHI experiment for precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with induced reactions of stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams is currently under preparation at GSI. The main goal of the HypHI project is to study neutron and proton rich hypernuclei and to measure directly hypernuclear magnetic moments at GSI and FAIR. In the first HypHI experiment (Phase 0) planned in 2009, the feasibility of precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with heavy ion beams will be demonstrated by observing π- decay channels of Λ3H, Λ4H and Λ5He with 6Li projectiles at 2 A GeV impinging on a 12C target. An overview of the HypHI project and the details of the Phase 0 experiment will be discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The HypHI collaboration aims to perform a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and FAIR in order to study hypernuclei at extreme isospin, especially neutron rich hypernuclei to look insight hyperon-nucleon interactions in the neutron rich medium, and hypernuclear magnetic moments to investigate baryon properties in the nuclei1,2. We are currently preparing for the first experiment with 6Li and 12C beams at 2 A GeV to demonstrate the feasibility of a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy by identifying Λ3H, Λ4H and Λ5He2,3. The first physics experiment on these hypernuclei is planned for 2009. In the present document, an overview of the HypHI project and the details of this first experiment will be discussed. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] New results for the strength of the symmetry energy are presented which illustrate the complementary aspects encountered in reactions probing nuclear densities below and above saturation. A systematic study of isotopic effects in spectator fragmentation was performed at the ALADIN spectrometer with 124Sn primary and 107Sn and 124La secondary beams of 600 MeV/nucleon incident energy. The analysis within the Statistical Fragmentation Model shows that the symmetry-term coefficient entering the liquid-drop description of the emerging fragments decreases significantly as the multiplicity of fragments and light particles from the disintegration of the produced spectator systems increases. Higher densities were probed in the FOPI/LAND study of nucleon and light-particle flows in central and mid-peripheral collisions of 197Au + 197Au nuclei at 400 MeV/nucleon incident energy. From the comparison of the measured neutron and hydrogen squeeze-out ratios with predictions of the UrQMD model a moderately soft symmetry term with a density dependence of the potential term proportional to (ρ/ρ0)γ with γ = 0.9 ± 0.3 is favored. AbstractAbstract
[en] The J-PARC E36 experiment is searching for lepton universality violation with a stopped kaon beam by measuring the ratio of the decay widths . Since the radiative decays are backgrounds to be removed in this measurement, the radiated rays were detected in a CsI(Tl) calorimeter. The energy calibration for the 768 CsI(Tl) modules was performed using mono-chromatic s from the decays. The delayed signals from the muon decays were required in order to improve the S/N ratio of the peak by suppressing background events. In addition, a new energy calibration method of the CsI(Tl) calorimeter using stopped cosmic muons has been established.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of 124Sn and radioactive beams of 124La and 107Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (ΔT≅0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation

AbstractAbstract
[en] The spallation of 56Fe in collisions with hydrogen at 1A GeV has been studied in inverse kinematics with the large-aperture setup SPALADIN at GSI. Coincidences of residues with low-center-of-mass kinetic energy light particles and fragments have been measured allowing the decomposition of the total reaction cross section into the different possible deexcitation channels. Detailed information on the evolution of these deexcitation channels with excitation energy has also been obtained. The comparison of the data with predictions of several deexcitation models coupled to the INCL4 intranuclear cascade model shows that only GEMINI can reasonably account for the bulk of collected results, indicating that in a light system with no compression and little angular momentum, multifragmentation might not be necessary to explain the data

AbstractAbstract
[en] Aligned fragment emission associated with peripheral and midperipheral dissipative collisions of 124Xe+124Sn at E/A=50 MeV is examined. Binary decay of the excited projectile-like fragment (PLF*) is correlated with significant velocity damping from the projectile velocity. Both a forward emission component, attributed to standard statistical emission, and a backward component are observed. The backward component arises from both statistical and dynamical decay processes. This backward component manifests a strong alignment with the direction of the PLF* velocity and is found to depend sensitively on the atomic number of the light fragment, ZL, and the velocity of the PLF*. The yield of the backward component is significantly enhanced relative to the forward component. The composition of fragments emitted in the backward direction reveals that a correlation between alignment and neutron excess exists for fragments with Z<8. From the measured asymmetry of the angular distributions, the angular distribution for dynamical fragment emission is deduced. Comparison with a schematic one-dimensional Langevin model allows extraction of both the magnitude and the dependence on ZL of the transient initial deformation of the PLF*. Fragment emission times of the order of 0.25-1.5x10-21 s are extracted.

AbstractAbstract
[en] The collision of 136Xe with a proton and with 12C at 1 GeV per nucleon has been studied in inverse kinematics with the SPALADIN setup at GSI. The detection in coincidence of the final state fragments (projectile residues, neutrons and Z ⩾ 2 charged fragments) with a large geometrical efficiency is provided by the inverse kinematics combined with a large-aperture dipole magnet and large detectors. Such a coincidence, measured on an event basis, allows us to select the excitation energy of the prefragment formed after the nuclear cascade and study its different de-excitation channels such as evaporation of light particles, asymmetric binary decay or multifragmentation. After a short summary of spallation reactions modeling, followed by the description of the setup, some preliminary results will be shown including the cross-sections of the reaction on the proton, compared in particular to other measurements as well as the cross-sections for the various fragment multiplicities. In the last section, we explain our method for the selection of the prefragment excitation energy and give a hint of the variables available in our experiment to study the excitation energy dependence of the prefragment de-excitation mechanism for both reactions.

[en] Fragments produced in binary splits of an excited projectile-like fragment (PLF*) formed in the reactions 124Xe + 112,124Sn at an incident energy of 50 MeV/A are examined. The dependence of the isotopic composition of light fragments (4≤ ZL ≤8) on rotation angle allows one to explore changes in N/Z on the timescale of the rotational period of the PLF*. Entrance channel effects are examined by comparing the isotopic composition of fragments produced in the binary decay following 64Zn + 27Al, 64Zn, 209Bi at an incident energy of 45 MeV/A.
