AbstractAbstract
[en] Highly coloured crystals of CaO and CaO:Mg have been studied using thermoluminescence emission spectra and electron spin resonance. The undoped CaO crystals show an intense phosphorescence at around 620 nm at room temperature and this arises from a peak in the TL curve at around 330 K. The emission arises from the process F+ + e -> F* -> F + hν and the electron arises from the thermally activated release of electrons from Mg+ ions as well as from other traps of an unknown nature. The Mg doped CaO crystals do not exhibit the intense phosphorescence and do not show a glow curve peak at around 330 K. Rather they exhibit a glow curve peak at around 180 K with a peak emission wavelength ca 690nm. The electron transfer processes in these crystals appear to be more complex than those in undoped CaO. AbstractAbstract
[en] Two centers with tetragonal symmetry and principal axes along <100> are observed by ESR in single crystals of CaO. The ESR signal intensity of both the centers is affected by visible light illumination. One center (g/sub parallel/ = 2.0048, g/sub perpendicular/ = 2.0007) occurs in highly colored crystals and may be associated with carbon impurities introduced during crystal growth. The other (g/sub parallel/ = 1.99905, g/sub perpendicular/ = 1.99956/) occurs in 'clear' crystals after 1 MeV electron irradiation and has the characteristics of an anion-cation vacancy pair center containing one electron (i.e. a P- or F/sub c//sup +/ center). The g-values do not agree with those found for the same center in polycrystalline CaO but are consistent with a simple model of a perturbed F+ center. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The Australian Radiation Laboratory (ARL) has participated in two International Intercomparisons of the measurement of external environmental radiation levels using thermoluminescence dosemeters. In all intercomparisons it was observed that those participants who used 137Cs as their calibration source underestimated the delivered exposure by approximately 6% when compared with those participants who used a 60Co calibration source. This was investigated further in a mini-intercomparison by those organizations (including ARL) able to calibrate dosemeters with both137Cs and 60Co. A separate investigation undertaken at ARL (presented in Appendix) also observed a 6% difference. The difference in response of thermoluminescence materials to 137Cs and 60Co remains unexplained. 12 refs., 5 tabs
