[en] The effect of the addition of small amounts of Mg O, La2 O3 and Y2 O3 in the optical characteristics of the high purity alumina has been studied. Specimens with high transmittance in the visible region has been obtained. High purity alumina powders have also been obtained through the crystallization of ammonium alum. [en] The phase diagram of the system LiF-GdF3 has been revised, using differential thermal analysis (DTA). We observed a eutectic reaction at 25 mol% of GdF3 and 698 deg. C and a peritectic reaction at 34 mol% of GdF3 and 755 deg. C. We found indications for a GdF3 phase transformation from hexagonal to orthorhombic at 900 deg. C. AbstractAbstract
[en] Microstructural analysis pf ceramics are to a great extent being performed by electron microscopy, allowing for the study of modifications due to different starting raw materials, processing, thermal annealings, etc. The development of electron microscopy and microanalysis techniques as well as the improving of equipment performance yield better correlation studies between the attained properties and the final microstructure. Some examples of studies carried out using electron microscopy are described. (author)

[en] The determination of average grain size, of the presence of monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic phases, as well as their relative distributions are necessary for the study of several partially stabilized zirconia properties. However, the phase distributions can be changed during the preparation of specimens for transmission electron microscopy, yielding misleading results. Para o estudo de diversas propriedades de ZrO2 - parcialmente estabilizada e necessaria a determinacao do tamanho medio dos graos, das fases existentes (tetragonal, monoclinica e cubica), e a distribuicao destas. A distribuicao de fases e observavel atraves de microscopia eletronica de transmissao, no entanto, durante a preparacao das amostras pode ocorrer transformacao de fase, descaracterizando a distribuicao original.
