AbstractAbstract
[en] This report summarises the results of the physics programme, performed in the years 1998-2003, which became possible after taking into operation the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the accelerator facility COSY-Juelich. Primary goal when building ANKE was to provide a tool which allows one to study processes leading to K+-meson production in interactions of protons with atomic nuclei, in particular at beam energies far below the free nucleon-nucleon threshold. From such data one hopes to extract information about the influence of the nuclear medium on elementary K+-production processes (i.e. in free proton-proton interactions), about the in-medium properties of this meson, and about collective effects in nuclear matter. The construction of ANKE and the K+-detection systems was started in 1989. After the integration of ANKE into the COSY accelerator ring in 1998, inclusive K+-momentum spectra were measured in a first series of experiments (p+A → K+X for different target nuclei A=C, Cu, Ag, Au). These data reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nuclei and, for the first time, allow one to extract the nuclear potential (or ''in-medium mass'') of K+ mesons at normal nuclear density with high accuracy. The ANKE data on K+ production in proton-deuteron interactions indicate a large production cross section on neutrons, as compared to proton targets. This fact must be taken into account, e.g., for the theoretical description of heavy ion data. In the second phase of the experimental program, K+ mesons from protoncarbon interactions were measured in coincidence with protons and deuterons (p+C → K+ (p or d)X). These novel data yield information about the kaon production mechanisms and give evidence for cluster-formation processes. Corresponding coincidence data for proton-proton collisions (p+p → K+ anti K0 d) revealed that K anti K -pair production close to threshold is dominated by kaons produced in a relative S-wave. This has been interpreted in terms of the first observation of scalar meson (a+0) production at COSY. The realisation of ANKE and the experiments has been made possible by the combined efforts of a large number of people, in particular my colleagues and friends from the ANKE collaboration. I want to express my deep gratitude for a successful and (mostly) enjoyable collaboration. I am particularly appreciative for support by the former director and director of IKP-II, Profs. O. Schult and H. Struoher, and my Ph.D. advisor and predecessor as ANKE spokesperson, Prof. K. Sistemich. This work profited especially from a close collaboration with Prof. L. Kondratyuk, Dr. V. Koptev (''the Master of all Kaons''), Dr. A. Sibirtsev as well as the former Ph.D. students, Dr. A. Franzen and Dr. V. Kleber. Section 3 gives a brief introduction into the properties of ANKE and the K+- detection systems. The main experimental results and their interpretation are outlined

AbstractAbstract
[en] The workshop on ''a0 physics with ANKE'' was held at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP) in Moscow on July 13/14, 2000. During the workshop the possibilities to study the nature of the scalar a0(980)-mesons with the ANKE spectrometer at the proton synchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) were intensively discussed. The nature of the lightest scalar mesons is a problem of fundamental interest in the physics of hadrons and one of the most important topics of present-day medium-energy physics. The workshop was triggered by a decision of the COSY program-advisory-committee (PAC) in May 2000. A proposal to measure the production of charged a0-mesons in the reaction pp → da0+ at ANKE received strong support and the corresponding beam time for a first experiment of two weeks was granted. It is scheduled for February 2001. One goal of the meeting at ITEP was a thorough preparation of those measurements. Another major point of interest was to develop ideas for future experiments with ANKE and to hear about recent theoretical achievements in the field of scalar mesons. About 35 scientists mostly from Russia and Germany joined the workshop and 16 talks were presented. This booklet starts with the approved proposals for a0+ measurements with ANKE. It contains a short summary of each talk as well as copies of the transparencies shown during the workshop. Finally, a list of responsibilities - as it was agreed on at the end of the meeting - is attached. (orig.)

[en] The workshop on ''Strangeness Production in pp and pA Interactions at ANKE'' was held at the Petersburg nuclear physics institute (PNPI) in Gatchina, Russia on June 21/22, 2001. During the workshop the latest experimental data on K+-meson production in proton-nucleus and elementary proton-proton interactions obtained at the ANKE spectrometer at the proton synchrotron COSY of the forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) were intensively discussed. About 25 scientists mostly from Russia and Germany joined the workshop and 20 talks were presented. This booklet contains copies of the transparencies shown during the workshop as well as short summaries of each talk. These presentations focussed on yet unpublished data from ANKE which are still under analysis. For completeness and in order to give the reader an overview about the accomplished results from ANKE, also copies of already published articles are supplied as the first section of these proceedings. The outstanding result up to now is the measurement of deep-subthreshold K+ production in proton carbon collisions. These data reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nuclei. (orig.)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Fundamental properties of the scalar resonances a0/f0(980), like their masses, widths and couplings to KK-bar, are poorly known. In particular, precise knowledge of the latter quantity would be of great importance since it can be related to the KK-bar content of these resonances. An experimental program is under way at COSY-Juelich aiming at the extraction of the isospin violating a0/f0 mixing amplitude Λ which is in leading order proportional to the product of the coupling constants of the a0 and f0 to kaons. a0/f0 production is studied in pp, pn and dd interactions, both for the KK-bar and the πη/ππ decays, using the ANKE and WASA spectrometers. The latter will be available for measurements at COSY in 2007. As a first step, isovector KK-bar production has been measured in the reaction pp → dK+K-bar0. The data reveal dominance of the a0+ channel, thus demonstrating the feasibility of scalar meson studies at COSY. Analyses of KK-bar and K-bard-FSI effects yield the corresponding scattering lengths, a(K K-bar)I=1 = -(0.02 ± 0.03) - i(0.61 ± 0.05) fm and |Re a(K-bard)| ≤1.3 fm, Im a(K-bard) ≤1.3 fm. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] The workshop on ''Scalar Meson Production at ANKE/COSY'' was held at the Madralin Conference Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences close to Warsaw, Poland, on May 22/23, 2002. The meeting was jointly organized by the Andrzej Soltan Institute for Nuclear Studies (IPJ) and the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Forschungszentrum Juelich GmbH (FZJ). It was the third in a series of topical workshops of the ANKE collaboration, the first took place at ITEP, Moscow (2000) and the second at PNPI, Gatchina (2001). During the workshop the latest experimental results on the production of a0+(980) resonances in proton-proton interactions, obtained with the ANKE spectrometer at the synchrotron COSY-Juelich, were intensively discussed. 15 scientists from Poland, Russia and Germany joined the workshop and 11 talks were presented. These presentations focussed on yet unpublished data from ANKE, on possible theoretical interpretations of these data, and on future measurements at ANKE. In addition, two talks were given on related experimental results from other facilities (WASA rate at CELSIUS, TAPS rate at AGOR and GSI). (orig.)
