AbstractAbstract
[en] The published information on environmental measurements and on discharges to sea and atmosphere from the Sellafield site has been used to enable estimates to be made of present and past radiation doses to members of the public in West Cumbria. Most of the available data relates to the groups of individuals in the population who are most highly exposed by virtue of their habits or their locations (the critical groups) and whose exposure has therefore been closely monitored. The doses to these groups have been estimated, but, in addition, consideration has been given to the exposure of average members of the public living in west Cumbria. Exposures as a result of external irradiation, and due to intakes of radionuclides by inhalation and ingestion have been evaluated. As a means of providing perspective, doses are compared with those arising naturally due to background radiation. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Values are reported for the enthalpy of solution of ScCl3, YCl3, LaCl3, GdCl3, YbCl3, YBr3, LaBr3, YbBr3, ScI3, YI3, LaI3, and GdI3 in water, of ScCl3, YCl3, LaCl3, GdCl3, YbCl3, ScI3, YI3, LaI3 and GdI3 in methanol and in dimethyl sulphoxide, of LaCl3 in ethylene glycol, of GdCl3 in dimethylformamide, and of LaI3 in dimethylformamide, propylene carbonate, and ethanol. These values are related to earlier published values in similar systems, and are considered in relation to solvating properties for the cations and halide ions. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Solubilities of Cs2[ReCl6] in methanol-, ethanol-, and t-butyl alcohol-water mixtures, and of Cs2[ReBr6] and Cs[ReO4] in methanol-water mixtures, are reported. Correlation of these solubilities with various solvent and solubility parameters is discussed; a simple correlation of solubilities with solvent composition and cosolvent characteristic volume is remarkably satisfactory. [en] Nuclear industry advertising in the United Kingdom is becoming more and more frequent, and is often controversial. The content and impact of recent campaigns are considered, especially the advertisement which portrays nuclear power as beneficial to the greenhouse effect. (author)

[en] The enthalpy of hydrolysis of ReF7(c) in Na[0H](1 mol dm-3 at 298.2 K) is -972 +- 11 kJ mol-1. From this result the enthalpy of formation of ReF7(c) is estimated to be -1 432 +- 11 kJ mol-1. (author)

AbstractAbstract
[en] Procedures are described for calculating internal pressures of water and deuterium oxide at given temperatures and pressures. The dependences on pressure of temperatures of maximum density are described using quadratic equations. Similar equations describe the dependences on pressure of the temperature at which internal pressures are zero. Equilibrium and configurational internal pressures are identified, the latter being linked to reorganisation of hydrogen bonds in water and in deuterium oxide. (author)
